I have learned a lot from Oud for Guitarists. I find Navid's site to be the most useful out there. LOTS of free videos and tips of things to do which I have integrated into my playing.

Navid also run the Maqam Mastery Program, an online course which is definitely worth taking a look at. He breaks down several main maqamat with advice on how to play them authentically.

A close second would be David Parfitt's site here:

http://www.oud.eclipse.co.uk/theory.html

His list of maqamat with visual positions for each, covering both the Arabic and Turkish traditions, is the most comprehensive out there.

Both of these gentlemen have taken a lot of time in creating their sites and deserve admiration, respect and thanks for their work in explaining this music to the West.

As a wildcard there are the Musiqana videos but these are all in Arabic and as such pretty useless to me. I'm the kind of person who needs things explained as well as shown. Just hearing the music is not enough for me to break it down. Anyway, here's the link:

http://musiqana.net/category.aspx?catid=26

I know someone here was thinking of translating the videos but it's nearly three and a half hour's transcription work. To pay a professional to do that would be a four-figure sum.

For me, I found http://www.i3zif.com to be the best out there. They have 3 different programs oriented towards different levels. Their Beginner program is available in English. It is taught by a pro player named Tarek Jundi.

You'll learn music notation, time signatures and authentic Arabic songs, all in video format. And the music sheet/notes are all included in a PDF file.

If you're into Arabic style playing, learn it from the source!:)

PS: The course is based on Omar Abbad's Oud Curriculum. He's one of the most famous oud teachers in the oud world and I believe he's located in the US.

Omar Abbad

Omar is based in Jordan. Occasionally, he teaches or performs in the US.
He teaches fulltime at the Jordan Academy of Music.
These are his FB pages:

https://www.facebook.com/pages/Oud-courses-by-Omar-Abbad/38454116834...

I've had the privilege of having Omar as my oud teacher for the last 3 years.
His method is amazingly organized and progressive. The first instructional book is 95% done, and the second book is 75% done.

I believe Tareq was Omar's student.
