Looking for a Yayli Tanbur

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a Yayli Tanbur.

As I'm gonna spend a week in Istanbul soon, I already contacted few turkish luthiers, but received only one answer for now :(

Does anybody knows where i could go to try / buy some nice Yayli Tanbur in Istanbul ?

That would be great if someone that bought one in Istanbul, like I'm gonna do, could share few tips :)

And of course, as a complete begginer with this instrument, any information about how to try it, how to reconize the one I should'nt buy... would be most welcome :)

Of course, if anybody is selling one, new or second hand, feel free to contact me :) :)

Thanks very much for your help,
Charly

If you want a simple yet good one look for Zeynel Abidin's one, it's based on the same construction as the cumbus, and it's cheap.
Some professional players are even using it.
If you are looking for something nicer, better and wood back, you can go to Mustafa Gencer's shop.

I do prefer the wood ones.

You can contact him through his FB page.
https://www.facebook.com/mustafa.gencer.980?fref=ts

As every string instrument, you must check if the neck is even and straight, looking from the body and head.

I'l be in istanbul on friday for 9 days, feel free to contact me if you're there.
I'm not sure i'll have access to mike's forum, so send me a message to

Thanks very much Franck :)

Actually, I didn't even know that Mustafa Gencer had a shop. That's a good news for me.

Since I get absolutly no answer from him on facebook, does anybody knows :
- If Mustafa Gencer has some Yayli Tanbur already made in his shop ? It would mean, no need to order 2 or 3 month in advance, I could simply go there and buy one from him straight away.
- How much, more or less, a Mustafa Gencer's Yayli Tanbur is costing.

I also had a contact with a seller.
He's selling this Yayli Tanbur for around 900 - 1000 $ and can deliver it to me (I'm french and I live in India) : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kf-QodreIYk

Did anybody bought a Yayli from this seller ?

Thanks very much for your help guys,

Have a great day,
Charly

Charly I was just typing up an email to you but figure I can post here best. I would recommend going for one from Mustafa Gencer as another person suggested here. You won't have any questions about needing to install a soundpost yourself...don't bother with it, just get something that is ready to rock.

Hello Adam,

Thanks for your answer.

Yeah I'll definitly go to Mustafa Gencer's shop.
I just hope that he will have some Yayli Tanbur ready to sell.
+ I have no idea how much he would charge for one.

There are two more options :

The two luthiers Saadettin SANDI - Bahadir SANDI are making one too.
It has a soundpost that you can adjust the pressure with a screw. Looks good. 1300$.
You can see an example here : http://www.ebay.fr/itm/Saadettin-SANDI-Bahadir-SANDI-HANDMADE-BOWED...

The luthier Elif Kizilhan.
A great player adviced it to me. But she works on order only.
Don't know yet how much it would cost.

Anyway, I'll be in Istanbul in a few week so I'll go to try all of them (if possible) and I'll let you know.

Wishing to you all a great day,
Charly
