Proposed Restoration

Hello to everyone, I am new here and wanted to post my project. I don't play any musical instruments, although I am learning guitar, I am very good at wood working. Recently I purchased an Oud as a "project". It needs work. So before I make any regrettable mistakes I am looking for any information anyone is willing to offer. I am in the research phase. I first need to identify it, and with the pictures you can see other things that need to be done. I would like to eventually play it. So here goes.

If someone could tell me what the label says, I would really appreciate it. I don't want to speculate.

@SufianSaeed
Thank you :applause: I'm thrilled :bounce: to think I have an oud built by a master. But is it real or a tourist one with his name. I need to be certain.

Wasn't Mohammad Faddel based in Baghdad not Basra?

That's what I see also, that Mohammad Faddel was in Baghdad. But if it's a fake why put your address as well as the location on a label in it. Are there two people with the same name ? Did he move for a time to Basra to continue his work due to the political climate ?
Can we determine how old it is from the construction or style ?

Just realized you are in ATL, you can go to the highland woodworker. I wish I had a store like it near me.

Original Mohammed Fadel ouds would have a different label with his picture on it. Also, the workmanship is much better. Fadel ouds with the oval holes never had rosettes in them.

Do a search on the forums to see past discussions on the topic. You will see.

these "fake" fadel ouds are very common in Iraq because of the reputation his ouds had people are tempted to try and make more money by putting his name on the ouds they make. There are more fake fadel ouds than real ones I bet.

Regarding your project Oud, its a perfect instrument to try your first restoration on. What do you want to do just a repair or full revamp? The possibilities are endless. IF you remove the face and replace with a new one, you can also fix that crack in the back easily. Change the pegs too.

Ok, Thanks. Yes I know where the Highland Woodworker is, although I'd have to take the back road due to the bridge collapse. I know of a few places to get a new top. Replace the pegs ? to what ? Ebony ?

Yeah, seems like a fake. Fadel ouds are notorious for being knock offs, because M. Fadel ouds are so sought after, other makers figured they could sell their ouds if they use his name. It's a pity really.

Floating bridge ouds have a different brace design than fixed bridge ouds. Conversion is not recommended.
