Oud Case review

I wanted to get a better case for my oud... I had a fiberglass case from Hand Made Strings (Facebook) and while nice, it wasn't a great fit and the padding was non-existent. I tried contacting some case makers in the states but had little luck.

I finally decided to purchase a case from Mattias (the cases are made in Spain).

I placed my order in February and the case was received in August.

The case arrived in a rather battered and very wet cardboard box (cardboard material could have been thicker considering an overseas shipment). The were some scuffs on the exterior of the case, but nothing of note.

The neck and peg box dimensions are perfect... the neck is supported at the bowl and at the peg box, there is plenty of room around the pegs so they don't bang against the sides of the case (or bottom).

Two items of note (of which I emailed Mattias over a week ago and has not yet responded) one of the clamps is not attached and the depth of the bowl in the case is too deep for my oud.

Not the best picture but I can fit most of my hand down the bottom end and it needs a good inch of padding so it will sit level in the case.

I have emailed the manufacturer directly to assist me with correcting these issues. If I don't receive a response from him, I'll have to see if I can find someone local who can fix these issues.

Price 4.5 stars (Exchange rate wasn't the best)
Product 3.5 stars (I not only sent measurements but a full-size outline of the instrument, it should fit better than it does)
Communication 2 stars

Hello George,

first of all I am really sorry for my late answer. As you probably saw during the last week I was managing ( mostly alone ) the project 7th oriental music-summeracademy, which started with the first concert just at the 29th August when your mail arrived. During that time I was unfortunately with a reduced internet connection, as the small town is in a narrow valley.
Btw., some results and videos are already posted in FB and also in the channel of Fadel Motaz:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=fadel+motaz
and also in my FB group:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/281898138566599/

Have a look to get an impression.

Concerning the case:
Yes of course, the missing niveters are definitively not o.k.. I did not unpack the case from the plastic cover in which it was delivered to me, as over many years now I never had this problem and all the cases I got from the production where always perfect done. The missing niveters can easily added with a hand riveter. I have this, but I am a bit too far off from you. So I hope you find near by a sadder who can make this in 2 minutes.

Concerning the packing:
I did send the case to you in the carton which was used to send it to me. it was a very strong one. Did you make a note or reclamation to the postman directly when you got it and saw the damages? This is always necessary in such situations and opens the options to get a compensation from the carrier.
The pictures show, it was really badly treated. I one shipped a case to new Zealand without having that problem. You never can be sure what happens, and other transportation options cost much more, probably the same as a flight to come here to pic it up personally.

Concerning the size:
Can you please give me the measurement of the depth of the case. Put a piece of wood over the open case and then take the measurement to the inside bottom of the case. Will be good to have a picture of this. Then I can check the situation.

Best regards

Matthias

Hello George,

did you get my mail or saw this message here?

If you do the measurement like in the attached photo here it will be fine.

Best regards
Matthias

Any recommendations for hard cases on the east coast of the USA?
