Sanding a fingerboard. Question?

Dear members, I have read on this forum and else where that when sanding an oud fingerboard the sanding block needs to be as long or longer than the fingerboard so an even sanding can happen. Surely if this is the case then the sanding paper used with the block needs to be as long or longer than the fingerboard also. Can you buy paper this size? or am I misunderstanding something about all this. Cheers

you are fine with a block the length of a regular sand paper sheet.

I would say, use a piece of MDF as its pretty much dead flat.
