Which gauge for a low string? (E to B?) *pyramid lute strings*

Hello everybody!

I know it will be a compromise but I would like to know if somebody has any idea what string of the pyramid lute strings could fit to sound not horrible in B and not explode in E (I mean for the lowest)

To have a C# was nice to go from B to D but it imagine it would explode if I tune it until E.....

what seems nice for C# is the 1238, but to go until E what would be the number?

if its impossible I will not insist promiss:cool:

Thanks a lot to the string freaks for the help!

mathias propose on a set on his website for a low D, a 1035 string

maybe a low D could be the best to go to E without risk and not be so flat at B...,?

1) No meaningful suggestions or guesses can be given without knowing the scale (the vibrating length) of the string. I don't want to assume it is 58.5 cm.

2) I have found that a string considered suitable for D on a Turkish oud sounds good all the way down to B. I would not dare tune this string up to E. I am not afraid of the string breaking. I am afraid of the oud breaking.

3) I would begin the experiment by trying a string suitable for E at the scale of the oud on which you plan to tune the bass to various pitched. Both oud and string are safe. Hope for the best. It it sounds awful at B try whatever gauge is the next heaviest. If that gauge is the recommended one for D I would give up the project and use one string for E and another for lower pitches.

thanks jody

i forgot completely to mention that it is for 58.5 string length and for turkish tuning

E F# B a e a d

do you really think that if only one string on 11 goes 1 tone higher it can cause injury to the oud? the general increase of tension would be little no?

I already did all this experiment with a E string and to tell the truth its a bit to floppy when tuned to B, but if there is indeed a risk for the oud I would not risk it

Thanks a lot!

7 courses? fourth course is aa just like second course? I think it's a typo. :-)

good point about it being only one string for the bass. Well, all I can say is that I wouldn't do it. Let's get someone else's opinion!

Hello,

every 1/2 tone changes the tension with .3 Kg. So it is up to the player if this is suitable for him. It is mainly a matter of playability and not of damaging the instrument if it concerns only 1 string which is going to be changed.

But may be you will find a calculated string in one of my sets in the shop:
https://music-strings.de/oud-Saiten-Aoud-Saiten
If not, send me a request through the shop and I will make a calculation.

Best regards
Matthias
