Oud projects: Riversong Guitars, Taqasim learning program

A few new things are happening at Oud for Guitarists.

Riversong Guitars in Canada in collaboration with Philip Shaheen have come out with a new Oud and a teaser will be featured on the OudforGuitarists YouTube channel. If you want to be one of the first to hear how it sounds (with different tunings), I will be giving a demo of it. You can sign up for my newsletter at http://www.oudforguitarists.com. Very exciting projects these guys are working on. :applause:

On the Oud learning front, I took to the daunting task of creating a taqasim learning program for intermediate/advanced Oud students. It's called Step-by-Step Taqasim. You can read a little update on it here: https://www.oudforguitarists.com/taqasim-program-update/ :airguitar:

I always hear about how Oud learners want to play taqasim.

But they have no idea where to start.

Someone wrote to me once and said,

"I have found a teacher who plays oud and I keep nagging him about teaching me taqsim. He has played improvised taqsim to be in different maqams and I’m almost jumping up and down. “YES! That’s what I want to do! How do you do it?”

He tells me that it’s a matter of imitation, listening... but I haven’t got enough tools in the tool box to get going. I want him to say ‘Okay, copy this....and this....here I’m going from Hijaz to Biyati....” Step by step."

Can you relate?? Not only is taqsim hard to learn, but it's also challenging to teach.

You need a little guidance on what to do and why you're doing it.

When I taught myself certain maqams, I had to figure out for myself why it's played like this or that. I really had to sit down and think, "hmm, I really don't understand this melody, but what could it be? Do I hear other players play it like this? Is this something from a song? Does it just sound cool? Is it helping him modulate?".

This is why I created Step-by-Step Taqasim.

Step-by-Step Taqasim is exactly that. A step-by-step way to learn and play taqasim.

One of my favourite tools which you get in this program is what I call, "fill-in-the-blanks" taqasim.

This is a crucial exercise. You have a pre-composed taqsim with areas that are blank. Your task is to write in the melody. Guidance is given as to what you should do, but it also requires you to practice your courage and experimentation muscle to see what you can come up with.

Because... let's be honest, one day you want to be able to create a taqsim on the spot completely on-the-fly!

The person who shared that story above has already joined the program and this is what he had to say:

"Fabulous start! This is exactly what I had hoped for!"

The program is finally available.

Oud for Guitarists

The Oud For Guitarists porogram is amazing. If you are a beginner or struggling in learning oud it is a must. I purchased (yes purchased, this is not a paid endorsement) OFG a few weeks ago and the concepts are finally making sense. I was taught Western music all my life so this program was greatly needed, especially since there are no teachers near me. When I am more comfortable in my playing I will purchase the Step-by-Step Taqasim.
Thank you Navid for this great teaching aid!:applause:
