Here's what I was told when I was a rank beginner by my teacher Issa Boulos. Listen to lots of taqasim, try to play short sections. Imitate as much as possible. I attached a short taqasim in Bayat maqam, relatively simple. Go to http://www.maqamworld.com and look at the Bayat scale. Play it with the audio on your oud. (tune your oud to the same pitch) Then once you have mastered the simple scale, start to play the first few notes of the taqasim. You could also start with a simple bayat doulab. Of course, following the videos on the "Learn to Play" page will also be a great start. I wish these videos were around when I was beginning.

Hey Sammy,

Here is the taqsim that Jameel attached. I cut it into 3 pieces and slowed it down for us slow pokes.

Bayat Taqsim - Part 1
Bayat Taqsim - Part 2
Bayat Taqsim - Part 3

Good luck to us all,
Mike
