Is this an authentic 1977 Garabet Bedrossian Oud?
Hello there,
So I'm looking for my very first oud to buy and I stumbled upon this oud and I wonder if it is authentic and is it worth it?
If you have had a similar oud, or an old syrian oud, tell me your thoughts about this one.

Yes, that's authentic.. but these are not known to be counterfeited.
These ouds usually need a great deal of work to get back on the road. Action issues, cracks and so on.
Though I don't see any cracks, I'd be almost certain the action would need some attention.

Yeah, as John said. Looks authentic. These ouds usually need a neck reset to have playable action, and sometimes there are cracks or loose braces as
well.
Often they are are made to tune lower than 440 as well and sound better in that tuning.

Do you think that this oud is already playable or does it seem to need a reset or repair from a luthier? and what are your thoughts about this oud
type/luthier 'bedrosian', do you recommend me this one?

Impossible to tell without seeing in person. Bedrossian made some very good ouds. What's the price? Can you have an experience oud player try it? Do
you have a local luthier who can fix any issues?

...from the pictures zoomed in, i can see that there are a couple cracks around the smaller rosettes...which seems to indicate that perhaps there
could be more and it should be look at first by a luthier before trying new strings to test it out.
This looks beautiful, and will probably sound the same once luthier-tuned-up first!

Cracks are clearly visible; one long crack running past the main rosette to one of the smaller ones and one small, maybe repaired, on the other side.
Doesn't need to be a deal breaker, but may need serious repair work.

Hello all togather,
only from the pictures it is hard to say if it is original, but I cannot exclude it.
If the date of 1977 is correct, it is a late instrument from him. I know instruments by him from the years 1955 / 1963 / 1966. So does anybody know
his living dates?
About the instrument itself:
-- there is a long crack on the bass side beside the big rose
-- the bridge looks crazy, I do not think it is original
-- between the 5th & 6th strings there is a repair part of wood in the soundboard, may be something did break out when once the bridge came
off
-- the action seems to be o.k. - it looks like there once have been a neck reset
How much is the seller asking for it?

I think bedrossian made ouds in late 70's, here is a picture of a 76 bedrossian that looks similar to the one I posted with a similar bridge :
The seller is asking for $300.
Btw I didn't see where you mentioned the wood replacement between the 5th and 6th string, is it above or below the rosette?

$300 is a reasonable price even if it needs a fair amount of work.

As Brian said, $300 dollars is a good price for the oud, so I'd say go for it. But as you said this is the first ever oud you're, I'm assuming you're
just learning to play now. I'd be cautious of damaging it accidentally, and make sure to keep it away from extreme temperatures and humidity. Also,
think about whether there is a good luthier to carry out the repairs in your area, wherever you live.
If you end up buying the oud, congratulations and enjoy it. If you decide not to, you could pass on the seller's information and I'm sure someone here
will pick it up.
