Tuning! Is it OK?

Hi,
someone asked me if it is safe If your Oud is tuned to C F A d g c , and you want to change it D G A d g c.

Will that change in the strings F and C affect the oud or the strings themselves?

Any particular strings brand that can be used or all are ok?

I once read that it is ok, but they were talking about a certain brand of strings "Daniel Mari Oud Strings" :
Gauges:
1st: .025in / .625mm
2nd: .029in / .73mm
3rd (wound): .024in / .61mm
4th (wound): .029in / .74mm
5th (wound): .033in / .84mm
6th (wound): .041in / 1.03mm

Thank you and your help is greatly appreciated.

It's more or less OK but if you are planning to keep it at that tuning I would make sure that the set is made for that tuning.

The gauges you listed would be ok, although I would tend to use something a bit lighter for the G probably, maybe .032. It's hard to say as every maker's strings are a bit different, and we don't know what size the oud is. .041 is pretty light for C, and actually makes more sense as a D string.

The main issue is what the total tension is on the oud (for safety), though of course the feel of the strings might not be what you like if the tension is too high or low.

But overall, I wouldn't expect any safety issues from using that tuning with those strings.

Thank you Brian.

I couldn't find any other sets that are listed as D G A d g c besides the "Daniel Mari Oud Strings".

I guess you can customize it. But are you aware of any ready sets out there?

Oh, it's an Arabic oud with almost standard size: Neck length: 19.5cm, Body length: 52cm, Body width: 36cm, Body deep: 19, Scale: 60cm.

Thanks

If the neck length is 19.5cm then the scale should be 58.5cm. Fingerboard from nut to body is 1/3 the distance to the bridge—this is how the neck-body joint is a fifth above the open strings.

The Pyramid 650/11 set is ok for that tuning.

Hi Brian,

Sorry, my bad. The neck is 20cm.
