Shurangiz Barbat ?!
I just stumbled upon this instrument while browsing for new strings and it has blown my mind. Anyone ever heard/played one of these? I understand the
shurangiz as setar with a tar membrane which makes sense because they both already share that sharp metallic sound anyway but the oud is deep and low,
what would a shurangiz style membrane do to the sound of the Oud?
This instrument is sold my PersianMusicShop.ir with the description "Shoorangiz - Barbat made by Master Jafrudi based on Master Ghanbari Mehr's
pattern"

It’s not exactly that. The shurangiz has a wooden section in the center of an otherwise membranous soundtable, like the “barbat” in
your picture.
Well a loud attack with rapid decay is what we expect from instruments with membranous soundtables, while wooden ones tend in the oppositie direction,
and, just as we might guess from its construction, the sound of the shurangiz falls right in between: it's louder than a setar,
but quieter than a tar, and has less sustain than a setar, but more than a tar. I suppose the mixed soundtable would do
the same thing for a short-necked lute.

There is a recording of one of these out there. I have heard it before... but I can't remember the Oudist for the life of me... At the time, I don't
recall it sounding very different, but it did have a different voice. I'll keep my eyes out and post back here if I find it.
Edit:
At the thread above, it's that link oudmajid.com which is now defunct. That's the Oudist I heard playing it. But his website's gone now.

i worked on one of these instruments by this maker that looks very much like the one in the picture.. to be honest , i found it to be very heavy and
some details were not very well executed,,,the skin was quite thick and the sound very muffled,, i believe it could possibly work but i feel it needs
a more thought out design, my friend and luthier Dimitris Rapakousios (dimitrisouds.com) and on instagram..made a very successful hybrid Lavta/rebab
with a skin head and sympathetics that is owned by musician Peppe Frana from Italy,, you might want to check around,, if i remember correctly this
particular instrument you are showing was fairly expensive ,,i don't mean to do a disservice to master Jafrudi as he makes some beautiful instruments
and perhaps he has developed this instrument from the early stages that i saw it,,just make sure there is a trial period of trying it out where you
can return it ,but you may have to pay shipping costs,, best of luck Brother
