Is it possible to make a turkish oud sound deeper and lower?

Hi,
I got interested in Oud after listenning to Trio Jobran.

I ordered the cheapest option from Thomann without knowing better. Now I realize that it's a bit high pitched for my taste. I didn't know Turkish oud is in a higher tegister usually.

I bought it for 180 euros, and returning it is not that easy. Also finding anything better in that price range might be difficult too.

My question is, could I order some arabic oud strings and restring it to sound deeper?

The shorter answer is yes. You can install strings for Arabic tuning and tune it to the typical C F a d g c used for Arabic ouds.

The longer answer is that it still may not sound "deep" even though the pitch is lower. The geometry of the bowl and bracing pattern of the face play a huge role in how the instrument sounds.

In addition to Jason's comments - when you change strings and drop the tuning, you're going to have to wait awhile and play the instrument in it's new tuning to see how things turn out. Good luck.

Cheers - Paul
