Fa - fa vs Do - do tuning
Hello All,
I have searched around and not really found an answer to my question. When I started playing oud my first oud was tuned FF,AA,DD,gg,cc.ff. My
instructor was from Iraq and also played in same tuning. I have never played an oud tuned (C)C,EE,AA,dd,gg,cc but see that it appears to be a little
more common than Fa - fa. What are some of the differences in regards to tone, pitch and and string tension? Any advantages to one over the other or
special circumstances where one is used or preferred over the other?

Hi Lael,
The world of the oud is very varied but I would say that there are 3 parameters:
- the repertoire you want to play/learn (fa to fa is more played in the arabic peninsula - do to do rather in egypt/maghreb ...)
- the pitch of your instrument 58.5cm rather Turkish - 60cm rather Arabic
- the tension of your string play
If you want to change your repertoire, which means your string playing, make sure you don't put any more tension in the neck of the oud. You can in
this principle play Arabic repertoire on a Turkish oud because the Turkish tuning fork is shorter (58.5cm) so the strings will be a little less taut,
therefore less tension in the neck. Conversely, a Turkish string set on an Arabic oud is not recommended.
From what I know CEAdgc is not very played but from my point of view is very practical! I play it because the intervals between strings makes it
easier to play on scales but it has less drones to resonate. The Turks do a similar fourths tuning but a higher tone because it is more practical for
Ottoman classical music for example. Also guitarists will appreciate the "EAdg" in the middle .... CFAdgc is played in Egypt etc. FADgcf in Saudi
Arabia ...
Personally I would say that you have to try ... and one day you will be on the 7 choirs to play it all ! Or you will buy several oud ^^ ...
