oak as tonewood for oud
Hello
what do you think of the use of oak for oud making ?
I know a beutiful exemple of oak using, an Albert Mansour oud, producing a wonderful tone, bright but not crisp. Very pleasant oud sound.
But i would like to know if you have others exemple in mind ?
Arabic makers as turkish makers.
Looking forward to read your feedbacks about

A luthier who knows what he's doing can achieve great instruments with almost any wood for the bowl (I'm sure you're not asking about oak for the top
- that is certainly a no-go). Mostly Albert Mansour works with walnut bowls, as far as I know. Sebastian Stenzel has built some walnut (european and
californian walnut) ouds and they also sound beautiful. But I also have one made by Stenzel from Grenadille and Pear wood, and this is not only
beautiful to look at but also sound is great.
The great thing about walnut is the structural stability along with little weight. And of course great sound! Walnut body guitars belong to the best
classical guitars Stenzel ever made...
Oak is very heavy so you would have to make the ribs very thin or get a very heavy instrument. I'm not sure how well oak, especially when thin, holds
up against cracking.

I have used Oak on some of my ouds. I find it works well alternating with Walnut or European Sycamore.

Many people put too much faith in the fact that the timber used for the bowl has such an effect on the sound.

sure the influence on sound is not that big, but can be the little something more one can await on the tone.
Albert's oud for exemple have a kind of bright and strong fundamental sound, i was wondering how far this can be attibuted to the tonewood used.
Cannot be the only thing for sure, but just a thought to consider the issue.
I would be curiosu to play in live an ALbert's oud in walnut to compare. My turkish oud is in walnut, i love it so much. The tone meets perfectly the
dynamic of the soundbaord to my taste

Here's an oud I built last year with ribs of Oak and Walnut:
and here's a child's oud (scale 45cm) which I built this year with ribs of Oak and European Sycamore:
Oak was used on many guitars built in the early 20th century, and although it fell out of fashion, it's not a bad tonewood.
