Tamzara and Sound Test

Hey guys,
This is me playing a short version of a Tamzara (9/8) Armenian rhythm.
I'm still a pretty novice oud player, but I'm wondering about my oud's sound. If you listen, the higher notes sound very mellow and clear, instead of a twangy sound that I'm used to hearing.
Is this normal?

It seems to me that the sound of all your oud strings is due to the unusual grip on the mizrap you are using. Have a look at how your oud heroes hold the pick and try emulating that. You are likely to enjoy the treble sound that ensues and enjoy the sound of the lower strings more. The left hand may also be playing a role here.

Huh...you know, I never realized that I held the mizrap like that until you pointed it out...that is a weird way to hold it...
I still think a lot of my problems can be solved by not being so tense. I really tense up when I play.

Also, some of the Armenian ud players use their left hand fingernails instead of the finger pads. This might contribute to the buzz you are missing.

Yeah, I know they use the nail. I try to do that, but I'm not sure if I'm at the commitment level to keep my nails long.
