My Oud explorations book (in English)

The entire Oud Explorations book is available freely as a web book at http://www.shortwavepress.com. If you find it suitable to you, digital and printed copies are available for purchase at Lulu.

I will be gradually adding my practice recordings to the web copy as my time allows. I am using the book exercises for my own practice and learning.

I would really appreciate it, if any one that purchases the book would come back and leave a review at Lulu of what they found good and not so good about the book. This helps me and any potential learners.

Mood: Dude, where's my Oud?

That's very cool Joseph. The only feedback is that some of the notations are in bass clef which is not usually what Oud players are accustomed to. I didn't read carefully enough to see if there was an explanation for that. But overall, I'm sure it will be useful for people.

Many thanks MajnuunNavid,

Yes that was one of the decisions that I pondered for a while, and I have an explanation for it in the book. I also learned the oud using the treble clef, but when I am practicing some of the pieces in the book, I hardly notice the clef after a while.

Cheers
Joseph

While I have no trouble reading bass clef, and I understand your reasons for using it, in this case it might be advisable to simple use a treble clef and 8va line to indicate music in the low octave. This would improve readability for the widest audience and be more consistent with conventional oud notation (in which notes below G are rarely notated as they are outside the range of the standard maqam system, and are instead primarily for support).

Hi Brian,

Thanks for the comments. I use 8va and treble clef for many of the pieces of the book already. Changing the ebook and printed copy would be difficult to do now, because I would have to make new editions, so I just have to live with my decisions. I can however change the free web copy where I am practicing, experimenting and adding recordings, if there is enough demand or interest in it.

Cheers
Joseph
