Arabic oud makers in Turkey or Greece?

HI -- I'm a Turkish oud player primarily, but have bought 2 E-Bay Arabic ouds. They're passable but not up to my standards. I'm going to Greece & Turkey soon and wonder if anyone has come across makers of quality instruments in either of those countries who might make a really good and well priced Arabic size oud?

Temel Sehit, of all the Turkish makers I've known, makes ouds that sound closest to Syrian instruments. I don't think he's made any in a while, though.

We are making Turkish ouds curretly. We should prepare a mold for Arabic ouds,if ordered much quantity.
Temel Sehit was making Arabic ouds,15 years before. He has lost very big money when he exported Arabic ouds,he couldn't get the amount from the importer.
He is working now in a small workshop in Izmir.I'll ask, when I saw him, if he still produce Arabic ouds,I'll write a message to the forum.

Regards.

Check out Demitris' site (noted in Gabriel's post above)--he makes Arabic-style ouds. I have never played one or heard one live, but in the photos the craftsmanship looks very good.

Hi,

I own a Nahat copy made for me by Dimitris Rapakousios. It is a beautiful instrument, and truly has a very similar sound to a Nahat. I know that as the years go by it will only improve and continue to sound more and more like the original it was based on.

If you would like to hear it I'd be happy to post a new sound file, and if you search the forum you'll see when I posted pictures of it. Just search Dimitris or Rapakousios, and you'll see the pics. Here is one of the oud in it's case.

Take care, and good luck with your oud search.

Sincerely,

mavrothis

Tassos Theodorakis - Xylophonia

I would like to recommend another young Greek Luthier who builds wonderful Arabic ouds.

His name is Tassos Theodorakis, and his shop, "Xylophonia" (Wood Voice in Greek) is in Thessaloniki (Salonica), which may be a convenient stop on your way to Turkey.

Check out his Web site:

Theodorakis' work really looks beautiful. Do you own one of his ouds Spyro? I've never had the chance to play one.

Take care,
