the Lute in the Middle Ages: Oud--->Laud--->Liuto

"The Arabs of Spain and Sicily were the first to bring the lute to Europe. It eas found exclusively in Italy and Iberian <b>wrench</b>ula until the 14th century, when its use extended to the rest of the continent. The fact that the instrument was easy to play and to carry, and loaned itself to the execution of all the voices of a polyphonic composition assured its considerable popularity during the Renaissance"

Francis Biggi (scholar and liuto player)

hi Stefan,
In Spain there are some builders who do this type of Oud you can see some in the following links.
Also there is a luthier in Casablanca Belhaiba Khalib that has made Ouds of this type for the group “cinco siglos”, you can see photos in the web

Though not as pretty as Ms. Caffagni, Jacob Heringman is an excellent lutenist based in London. His brother is married to my wife's cousin, so we're family, sort of...

I've just completed the manuscript for five of the "Cantigas de Santa Maria", written for small ensemble - one plucked string instrument, one bowed string instrument, one wind instrument and one percussion instrument. In a month or so I will do a studio recording of these cantigas, and will publish the sheet music. I will be playing oud on these recordings, but it would be nice to vary the playing by using a little medieval lute like the one you show. Would it be possible for you to let us know how to contact the luthier who makes the instrument in the photo? It's beautiful!
