I love this site, first I was taken with the many antique ouds in his collection and one in particular holds a very curious spot in me, the Kalfayan
oud . Then went to his site this past week and had the pleasure to view a very special and apparently well crafted (?) patchwork oud (?) and if that
not enough, check out the face. Great imagination. I would love to hear it played.

Yes Jonathan, that is the one. What do you think of it? Just the idea of fitting those pieces together and having everything match and the color
combination I find artistic and original.

I have seen such "patch work" on a baglama, played by Ali Ekber Cicek. When people talk about Cicek, they always mention "the baglama made of a
thousand pieces." It seems to be the same idea to a tee. I am not sure if Cengiz Sarikus made the baglama or not, but my guess is that he did not. He
also has an oud shaped, more or less, like a guitar.

Ali Ekber Cicek's patch work saz was made by my first master Yusuf Atasoy in 1960 at Ankara.After Yusuf Atasoy,his friend Huseyin Koluman made 2 or 3
patch work sazs before he died in 1990.

Hello ktb711 and Haluk, In his email to me he did not say if he made the oud but on the his site he has Ayhan Asan as the owner of the patchwork oud.
There must be lots of work and patience that goes into this oud. The guitar shaped oud that he calls nev ud is quite different and looks like a cross
between oud and guitar. Even his version of cumbus, the one he calls ahenk, is different with wooden staved body, spuce top (I think) and skin under
the bridge with all the inlaid embelishments. Are there any pictures on line of the patchwork baglamas that you mention on the internet?

Interesting oud. I wonder how much it weighs. Surely the patchwork is glued to a typical staved body, right? I can't imagine otherwise. For a kid of
the 70's, it brings back some memories of the styles of that era.

It just seems like there would have to be hide glue used with plenty of paper support on all the seams. Looks like it is symetrical but yes looks like
it is very heavy. Very unusual, nice contrasting shades of wood. It would be great to get some knowledgable opinions on the construction of this
oud.

I know that patcwork closely.It needs very big patience.In 1960 my first master of baglama was made this patchwork bowl for an artist of Ankara
radio.There is nothing under the patchwork bowl.On a mold, every piece was conformed each other and glued one by one.The first bowl was made on a
broken hand carved bowl for to complete it.

Thank you Haluk, so the only support is the hide glue with paper over all the inside joints. The mold has to be a solid mold or like you mention a
broken oud. Do you think this patch work oud bowl has much strength and do you think the top would have to be made thicker than usual to add to the
strength. From the picture this oud looks a little smaller but not small like a zenne oud. What do you think?
