having trouble tuning, my egyptian oud. slippage.

Ok I have a delux egyptian oud, i got from ebay. and I'm trying to tune it with my D,addario strings but it is so hard to just turn it, and then when it is tuned, it slips all completelly back. so I'm just wondering if there is anyway to turn the tuning pegs, and keep it from slipping. also, why don't they use metal tuning heads like a guitar. I think that would make it a little easier.

P.S. It is not just because of the D'addario strings, and the wierd tuning, because the same thing happened with the pyramid string that came with.

I have a similar proble, after tuning it (which can be done by taking the pegs a little out so it becomes looser and easier to turn) then what you do is when you stick it back in put some crayon around the peg and it wont turn as much
