Material?

Hello oudmakers,..
Iam really interested in making my own oud.
Only I live in the country with the biggest wood ressources of the world.. and I cant seem to find a good source for wood.

My question is. Does anybody know where to get a nice piece of walnut in Canada?
Jameel how much would something like you had for your first project cost?
Thanks

You should be able to get nice walnut from a hardwood lumber yard. Forget home improvement centers, they won't have it. Look in the phone book for "hardwood lumber". Or call up a custom cabinetmaker/furnituremaker and ask them where they get their wood in your area. A chunk of walnut big enough for one oud shouldn't cost more than about $30, at least in my neck of the woods. I didn't have more than $100 in wood in my first oud. It's the tools that will really cost you if you don't already have them. Look for a thread here about tools, I think Richard made a decent list at one time or another. Go for it Samir!!!!! We're rooting for you! :applause:

Hi Samir,
Jameel is correct, you can get enough walnut for an oud for $30 Canadian and there will be wood to spare. I don't know if Westwind hardwood is in your neck of the woods or not, but if so they will have good clear straight hardwood (they even ordered in some nice quartersawn cedar for the tops for me). I've also had good luck with wholesalers, they don't seem to mind selling to the little guy here and the savings is huge!

I hope to see you build your Oud, small steps will get you there!

Regards,
Scott

Sorry, that was Windsor plywood which I got my wood from, Westwind is an online store in Victoria which ships anywhere, I'd try the Windsor first if you have one.

You may also check ebay for material, but beware of what you get.
Good luck.
