Hi all
I have a little problem with this samai.
I play arabic oud with the standart tunning.
The notes here are turkish notes.
In wich scale it's better to learn and play it:Nihawand on C,or nihawnad on D.
I heard the performance of Shaheen, but it was not clear for me in wich scale he played it?
Can you help?
Bruno

Dear Amarock
Your tuneing is not a problem unless you try to play along with a recording. Otherwise regardless of the pich, just assume 3rd finger on 4th string from the bottom is your G; then you will be using Turkish notes. If you are experienced player that capable to play this Semai, I am sure to play this way will be no problem for you. Good Luck
Regards
Dincer

Amarock,

Dincer's suggestion is a good one. If you can adjust to the Turkish notation you should be able to play the piece, which is in makam Nihavend (Arabic Nahawand) with the tonic on the note rast. In Turkish notation the notes are written a fifth higher than in Arab notation, so the note rast for example will be written as a G (equivalent to what would be nawa, second open string, in Arab notation) instead of the lower C. You could rewrite the piece in Arab notation, which will make it easier for you if that's what you are most comfortable with. Just transpose everything a fifth lower.

Shaheen's performance is in D. If you want to play along with it you will need to play in Turkish tuning (which will produce Nihavend in D using the standard fingerings for the makam), or to play in Arab tuning, but with the tonic moved up one tone to the open fourth string dugah (that is, use a scale similar to makam Buselik). Playing the piece on dugah in Arab tuning is technically possible, and may be what Shaheen actually did, although I am not sure of that.

Enjoy!

Amarock,

There is another way for you to play the piece in D along with the recording while using Arab tuning and without going through complicated transposing. Pretend that the piece is in Arab notation, and play the notes exactly as they appear, except one string lower (lower in pitch). So the first note of the piece, D, would be played on the open fourth string A instead of the open third string D; the next note d would be played on the second position on the second string instead of the second position on the first string, producing an 'a'; and so on. The key signature would change a bit: the B's would remain flat but not the E's. This method should work easily for most notes, although some of the high notes (those way up the fingerboard on the first string) may take a bit more effort transposing.

Good luck!

Tanricorur's nihavent sazsemai

Thank you Dincer for the great information in your posts, sharing your mastery of the oud, its creation and music.
It is a privilege to have the counsel of a master like you.

Now onto a more mundane task and request. I have been an admirer of Cinucen Tanrikorur, both for his oud technique and his composition, for a while now and of his student, Necati Celik. They both examplify the finest of the Turkish style; this is my prejudice, I admit.

I would love to have a copy of the Nihavent Sazsemai.

Thank you for your sharing with all of us in this forum.
