hard cases of different manufacturers

hello all,

Since the past couple of posts have been dealing with hard cases of different manufacturers I would love to hear what other people have for their personal protection for their UD's.
Personally I have a hard case that Peter Keyvelos makes. It is made of fiberglass so it is very strong and, in my humble opinion, very lightweight. I absolutely love the thing and wouldn't think about using anything else but that is my humble opinion; do any of you feel the same way I do about yours?

hello,

Sorry about the delay on this post as I am still looking for my camera in my room. I will take pictures of it and post them once I find it.
As for a little bit about the hard case it goes like this. I got this at Unique Strings from Peter Keyvelos, the shop resides in Belmont, Massachusetts which is about an hour away from where I live. The cost of the case is either 300 or 350 (US dollars) as I had purchased it about half a year ago I can't remember which cost it was. I have a turkish oud and I know that it fits that perfectly. As for an arabic oud you should call the shop and find out; the number of his shop is (617) 489-1254. He is absolutely wonderful to talk to and very knowledgeable, I highly recommend him.

I'll post a few pictures very soon. :-)

That's $650 in Egypt, which probably equals about $2,000 in Massachusetts. John Bilezikjian also sells a fiberglass case sized for Turkish ouds. $? I don't know of any Arabic cases in fiberglass.

a good guitar gig bag is generally $100+, hard cases tend to start at around $150 for generic, sort-of-fits cases. High quality custom cases are usually $300-800 depending on the situation, maker, etc.
The last person i knew who bought a good hard case for upright bass paid about $2000 (it was for a $20,000+ instrument, so that's not too bad, %-wise).
So in my opinion, $300 for a really good oud case is not unreasonable. Especially if you have a valuable oud (like a kyvelos). Even if you have a cheaper oud, the case will outlast your oud and you could use it for whatever you upgrade to. So it's kind of an investment.

pablo has - at least he used to have - a series of photos illustrating how to make a hard oud case out of fiberglass.

That site is long gone. What it described is to make a form with cardboard, wrap it with fiberclass, cut off the lid, add hinges, handles, padding and ouila! Just like that. (You'l stop itching in a couple of weeks)

Hi Everyone,

I have a custom oud being built for me which is of a rather bizarre size. Will post some pictures when it is complete. I remember once seeing a website that was really detailed on how to build a fiberglass case. But I don't think it was the one Dr. Oud referrenced above. Does anyone know of any resource (web or book) that can help guide me through this process?
thanks

found this on another site:

http://www.yurdan.com/

there's an inexpensive, rather innovative looking hard case for oud (under musical instruments section) but i think it would fit turkish sized ouds only.

Richard, the case Stefan made for Alan was made of vacuum pressed ABC plastic. Is lighter than fiberglass but very strong and custom design is possible. He made some for ouds and also renaissance lutes.

Best wishes

You're absolutely right, Ronny, I was thinking fiberglass from the previous posts. I even had the case in my shop, duh! It's a nice piece of work.
