Mohamed Matar

Listen to this guys. Maybe a new website in the making? :airguitar:

This is from the Oriental Moods Series of CDs produced by Daniel Der Sahakian. The same series that has the two bellydance CDs of Farid el-Atrache remakes.

It is called Mohamed Matar Plays Bouzok.

Hi Mike,

Issa first told me about this guy. He said he was the greatest buzuq player ever.

Orietnal Tunes has a snippet about him http://www.orientaltunes.com/listening_page2.html#Matar

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the links. Issa wasn't kidding man. I just updated the MP3 Page with one of the taqsims from the CD that is on the second link you provided. I know it isn't an oud taqsim, but who cares. Just listen to that guy! He's off the hook. I honestly haven't stopped listening to that CD for the last couple of days. This guy is non-stop tarab! Seriously, he was amazing. I want a bouzok now!!!
:airguitar: :D

Here are some pics from his CDs.

Take care,
Mike

Issa's nephew Wanees (17 years old) plays the buzuq. (He also plays violin and percussion, and excellent at all)

The buzuq is very different than the oud. First of all, it has nylons frets. Secondly, you play up and down the neck mostly. There's a lot of jumping up and down, which I found kind of akward as an oud player. You know, Nazih Ghadban makes buzuqs . . .

Mike and Sam,

These taqasims are fantastic. So exotic sounding. With that metallic-drone sound, it is a bit of a cross between an oud and a harpsichord! I have been kind of getting into the idea of getting (or maybe making:D) a buzuq. When I heard Issa and Wanes play theirs a few weeks ago I really went for it. We were playing in the ensemble and Issa picked up the buzuq and started improvising. It was magical. Samir (the oud maker from Syria I mentioned in another thread) also send me this file which even motivated me the more. I've got to get this CD.

Hey guys,

Well, I am glad to know that I wasn't the only one blown away by Usstaz Matar. Glad you all enjoyed the files. Jameel, your file was really nice as well. Let's get some bouzoks man!

Spyros, I am a oud guy first....don't worry. :D

Oudman, you always have the best leads for new CDs. Thanks man.

Take care,
Mike

Oudman is right on the ball. Ziad Rahbani's "Bif Afrah" is an amazing recording. It's my favorite instrumental recording ever. It is always inspiring.

Buzuq

Hi

I guess everyone is familiar with the CD 'Taqasim' featuring Simon Shaheen on oud and Ali Jihad Racy on buzuq? If not, it is well worth a listen.

All the best
