Hi Dirzi,

It depends on how often you play, but typically I change my strings once every 6 - 8 months. Usually, people change them once a year. Some strings are more durable than others. With my experience with Labella, the "winding" on my "d" strings would start to unwind after 4 months. As long as your strings still have "tone" to them, there's no need to change them.

For Pyramid strings, check out their oud selection of strings at http://www.pyramid-saiten.de. You can order them in US from info@pyramidstrings.com or straight from Pyramid at pyramid@junger.de

I don't have to change them as often as you guys. But then I again, I am not a practicing fiend. I usually change them once a year or so. I use Pyramid strings, but after Sam's thread, I might look into trying lute strings soon.

For gut strings, I recently purchased what is called "Nylgut" strings, which are considered to be synthetic gut strings. (This for the treble strings) I purchased them from http://www.aquilausa.com/ng_strings.html

I haven't tried them yet, so I can't say what I think of them

One thing to note, is that you have be aware of what gauge you want, since certain gauges at certain string lengths, for certain tunings, may give you undesirable tension. You can use String Calc to figure this out http://homepages.enterprise.net/wadsworth/downloads.htm

I think Adnan Darwiche tried nylgut on his Bashir by Yaroub.

Hi Ronny, thanks ( this is stefan here, by the way)...

Im looking fro new strings , tunings etc, so I have some questions for you and dr oud, and it relates to these aquilas as well:

i got an email form Curtis at Aquila and your friend believes to have calculated out the correct tension for Daddarios for Bashir tuning at 57cm scale length. per Curtis email, he included his snippet:

>>I use D'addario's strings, but I don't tune them as they
suggest: gdaebf#. Instead I tune them to fcgdaf. Hence, I am getting
different
tensions on my Oud than is really published by D'addario. I hope this is not
too confusing. Here's how I came up with the tensions below:
1. I calculated the density of each string on the D'addario set (given the
string length, diameter, the note, the published tension, I figured out the
density using stringcalc).
2. I then used the computed density to calculate the tension of each
string on the D'addario according to the new tuning.
This gave me (for 57cm vibrating length):
string note diameter density tension
1 f' .56mm 1.02 39
2 c' .71mm 1.02 35
3 g .64mm 4.50 70
4 d .74mm 4.80 56
5 A .84mm 5.50 47
6 F 1.04mm 6.00 50
( end snippet)

anyone feel like confirming?

I also checked Matthias Wagners oud string pdf ) http://www.music-strings.de/kataloge/aoud_e.pdf and either from that chart and/or this one, the daddarios seem absurdly high tension wise. however, theres ben noproblems on the top.

Questions are as follows:
1 as anyone checked Mathhias custom lower tension sets for bashir tuning at the end of that pdf? More critcally, what will happemn to my bahsir if i go with such a dramatic change in tension?

2 Ronny, i like my Yaroub very much (crack hasnt expanded, so im ok for now). However, i did pick up a turkish Sandi here as backup - good price, nice instrument.( i couldnt risk the time delay in case i had to put the bashir in the shop.)
I keep it tuned a minor third lower than the bashir, so its D A B e a d.
Now, i want to transfer this tuning over to the bashir, and im looking for tension / string reccomendations for that - or is 57 cm too short? if so, ill have to sell it or trade it for a 59cm yaroub???
3) I believe there are maris on the sandi now, and they seem a bit weak. Any reccomendations for either strings/tensions for D A B e a d at 59cm on a Turkish oud?
thanks very much for any light you and the good dr can shed...
