Hi
I notice that the new Youssou N'Dour album "Egypt" features Mamdouh el-Gibaley on oud. Has anyone heard the album?

Hi David,
I haven't heard the album, but I believe Mr. el-Gibaley is on tour with him in the States right now. A friend of a friend plays viola in Youssou
N'Dour's current group and it was mentioned that an amazing Egyptian oud player was in the band.

I haven't had a chance to hear the album either, but I'm going to the Berkeley show this Friday. Naser Musa, who taught at the Mendocino
Middle-Eastern Music & Dance camp and is a great guy and great oud player and singer, is on the US tour. I don't think that there's another oud
player, but I could be wrong...
I'll let you know next week!

Naser Musa is a Palestinian-Jordanian oudist living in Southern California. He is one of my teachers. His particular love is Khaleeji (Arabian Gulf)
music. Yes, Naser is touring with Youssou N'Dour.
Mamdoh El Gibaly is an Egyptian oudist who just came out with two CDs of taqasim and oud w/percussion. I like his playing. Some of his work is a
little "experimental," but not cheesy. His CDs are available from Rashid.

Hopefully they will have them in stock. I ordered three Hussein Sabsaby CDs a couple of weeks ago, but still haven't received them yet. I wish Rashid
would add a search feature to their website, as the present system is absolutely useless!

Yeah, it seems the only "search" feature for the Rashid store is to go to their location in Brooklyn and look around...oh well... 
I hope you get your order in. Let me know if you'd like me to contact them about it, they are not far from me (and plus it's a local call).

Juliet told me about the La Pena show (OK - how did you get the tilde on there?). I play in Fremont on Saturday nights, so I don't think I can make
it - but I'll keep trying!
The Youssou show was great! Yes, Naser was the oudist and he did a beautiful job. He and the kora player seemed to be having a great time playing
off each other. Tobias wasn't in the band but Omar Faruk Tekbilek was. It was quite an interesting blend of Egyptian and Senegalese styles, way
different from what Youssou has done in the past. Sorry you missed it!
Hope to meet you some day soon - maybe we can get all of the Bay Area udis together!

Hey guys,
I can contribute very little to this great post, but I just wanted to tell all those who are not familiar with Tobias Roberson to please look him up.
He came down, about two years ago, to a few Kan Zaman rehearsals as a friend of our tabla player, Faisal Zedan. Tobias is amazing. You'd think he
lived in the Middle East all of his life, the way he plays.

My wife and I took lessons from Tobias a couple of years ago and, yes, he is amazing! Apparently he's gone to India for 6 months to study yoga.
Faisal is teaching in his place (in Oakland, I believe). Faisal was at Mendocino camp also.
John,
I just looked at my calendar and noticed that Dec. 11th is a Sunday. La Pena has something else scheduled for Saturday, so I'm hoping you're on
Sunday...

Just to let you know that the Sabsaby CDs arrived safely. The three I ordered were 'Takaseem Sharkeyah', 'Memories from Damascus' and 'Oud
Improvisation 2004'. The music is absolutely beautiful and I think these CDs are going to be some of my favourites.
However, I was very disappointed with the CD 'packaging'. They are basically just CD-Rs with a homemade looking single-sided insert and no liner notes
whatsoever - not very good value for $12.98 each. Now, I could have just got a copy of these CDs from someone as MP3 files, but I decided to buy the
originals as I like to read the liner notes and support the artist. This kind of cheap and nasty packing will not exactly encourage me to do so in
future though, I must admit!

Hi All,
I just got an e-mail from Rashid Sales. They just returned all of the Mamdoh El Gibaly CD Vol.2 to the manufacturer because a significant number were
defective, including the one I received. They said they hope to receive replacements in a couple of weeks.
Sorry I didn't warn the board about the Sabsaby CD--I ordered one and got the "homemade" CD. I didn't mention it at all because I didn't like the
recording enough to recommend it.
I wish Rashid.com would improve their web page to make it easier to browse, change their server so that their e-mails didn't bounce so often, and mail
their CDs better padded so that the cases didn't arrived cracked.

Back to the original question by David, I just got the 'Egypt' CD last night.
It's beautifully produced and is a very cool recording, but doesn't sound at all 'Egyptian' or even Middle-Eastern. Except for a couple of tracks,
the oud isn't noticeable at all - and even on those it is mainly there for texture. There's a short solo on the last track but nothing
outstanding.
The production reminds me more of some of Sting's work than anything else, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, of course - it's a really nice album -
just don't expect any fantastic oud work. The oud was featured much more prominently in concert and the songs sounded quite different.
So, who should I listen to, David or John? I was thinking about ordering some of the Sabsaby CDs... David, which of the three would you recommend
most? John, which one did you get and not like?

If you liked the N'Dour album you'll love the recent album by Thione Seck called Orientation. He is also from Senegal and worked with Indian and Arab
musicians fro his album, which was recorded before Youssou N'Dour's but took ages to be released. It has more of an Arab feel to it, I think.

I like all three Sabsaby CDs that I ordered (listed above), but I deliberately went for just the taqasim recordings and avoided his more "easy
listening" ones. I agree with John that the production quality is poor - it sounds like they are just MP3 files burnt onto CD. As I already mentioned,
the packaging is terrible too. The "Memories from Damascus" CD has two tracks missing from the track listing, but I emailed Mr Sabsaby and found out
what they should be. I have added all three CDs to my website at:
