Old Oud claimed to be F. Shehata - Confirmation needed
Hello Everyone,
The owner of this oud is 70+ years old. He told me that he bought this oud from a workshop located in Misr and Sudan street over 30 years ago. The
oud does not have a lable inside it.
It does look old even after it was given couple of shellac coats.
Can anybody confirm if this oud is a true Farouk Shehata or not.
Mike, I am wondering if you could help with this matter please.

Honestly, I don't know. It very well could be. Is there a reason why the 70 year old man would not be telling the truth about where he got it? As far
as I know, Usta Farouk (and now Mo) was the only oudmaker on Misr and Sudan Street. His shop is in the basement of an old villa. I hope that helps.

HEY SYDNEY.....well i need u to tell me if the face of the oud is a dark color....its not gonna be too darm kinda like a bronze color...and if u can
get me a pic of where the neck meet the back...from the back.......but other than that..i have two of his ouds......the work looks very similar....but
those two things will confirm if it is....BTW......it sounds like it is....very beautiful playing btw i loved it....mashallah..very gifted.

I can answer that one. The player is Emad (Sydney). I may be biased, because he is a good friend of mine, but I think he is a great oud player (and a
good bloke, as we say in the antipodes)

i thank you for taking the time to look at this oud. I did not mean to sound like I did not trust the man. I also agree with you that Shehata workshop
is the only oud place in that area so no doubt that man was talking about Farouk Shehata.
Samir,
You made me confused now. This oud Elie playing is very close not only by the look of the pick guard but also the out line of the sound board and the
chin at the end of the fingerboard. Thanks for your help and confusion  .

Hi,
Samir, I think/hope Elie got confused there. I've seen these ouds many times, often in the hands of -older- artists from the gulf. I remember a
jalsa where Mohammed Abdou played an instrument just like this. I also think Abadi has a few in his collection. If memory serves me here, I recall
someone telling me those were F.Shehatas indeed.
Let me get back to this...

Is it right to say that F. Shehata had a style ouds famous for that pick guard? Or do you reckon that F. Shehata designed this pick guard to be a
trade mark for his work?

Regarding what Sidi has posted.
It looks to me like a syrian oud if I ever saw one. I doesnt have the traditional egyptian style. But of course I could be wrong with that to. Might
aswell send maurice that picture aswell.

Samir,
As far as I know, both F.Shehata and Fathi Amin learned oud making from Jameel Georges, who originally came from Halab, Syria. Therefore it is only
natural to find similarities with Syrian -specifically Halabi- models, in their work.
Emad,
That was a nice little piece you gave us there. I would have loved it to cross into other maqams, say Bayati for instance.
I think Maurice would solve this better than any of us here. He should be able to give you a final confirmation.

The owner of this oud is a very luck man to have it. Wow that is so good to know indeed. how nice to have an old shehata oud made by the master Farouk
Shehata. I am sure he used to be like all the good makers that never took any short cuts.
