Jack Baba, the assyrian oud maker
His ouds seems quite good. Anyboody has one of his ouds or know more about??

Hello Zalzal, A few years ago when i wanted to order one and asked an owner if Jack Baba's ouds sounded good. His answer was for me to contact the
maker and go try one. I did not get a yes or a no as to the sound of this owner's oud. Not to long ago I discovered in a conversation about oudmakers
with a professional oud player that he owned a Baba oud and said his looked very good but didn't sound good. I know that Jack Baba has been building
ouds for a long time. I wonder if there are any Baba oud owners will to comment.

In searching for another oud maker, I recalled Jack Baba the Assyrian oud maker from Connecticut. Anyone know of any info other than what is in the
news article posted above?

He's listed in the on-line white pages, in the same city as noted in the 2002 article, but at a different address.

Very interesting.
I happen to have a hybrid J. P. Baba oud for repair here made in 1980 (oud #22). It has a Kyvelos soundboard on it, so I don't know how the original
sounded.
It needs a new fingerboard and some other stuff, but once it's finished I will probably offer it for sale.

In 1997 I bought a 1979 Jack Baba from John Bilezikjian. Here are a couple of pix taken right after Dr. Oud installed an extended fingerboard. I know
nothing of Jack Baba's "usual" style of ouds but, prior to that fingerboard, it was a close copy of a Karibyan.
Below is a sound file; a shortened clip of a tune I recorded using the Baba, for a friend's 1999 Christmas album.
