musical perception test

this was posted to the mandolin.cafe:

http://www.delosis.com/listening/home.html

from the university of newcastle upon tyne: 30 pairs of short musical phrases are played to test your musical perception ability - some tunes the same, some slightly different and you have to choose.

24 out of 30 - i didn't do all that well ...

Congratulations Ronny.

Brian,

I scored 28 out 30 also but that does not mean I am as clever as you. :D

I scored 26 out of 30...
It's been really hard to get concentrated wit such a sound...I'd really like to know more about the tune's selection method...
Ciao everybody, Peppeo.

I got 29 out of 30, and I would probably have heard 30 if I hadn't slightly dozed off at number 12 and woke up with a start wondering if I'd heard correctly or not. I agree with Brian and Peppeo, I found the midi sound most offensive and mildly anaesthetic. Alan

I was pretty sure which ones I got wrong . . . a combination of spacing out while the tune was playing and psyching myself out (thinking the test-makers were trickier than they actually were)
An interesting breakdown would be how many identical melodies were mistakenly called different and how many different melodies were mistakenly called identical.
In my case, I think both mistakes were the former kind.

The first time I tried I got 28... Like Brian, I was thinking that the test was trickier than it really was so I tried it again and got 26... that's when I figured out that the ones I thought were close but different were really the same. Third time was the charm once I figured that everything really was as obvious as it sounded - scored 30. I'm kind of pissed that I didn't have Ronny's confidence the first time around
