Rosettes ... When they can add value to the oud?

Hello Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone ever thought of this question.

Most of ouds come with rosettes of many different kinds of material and size but can they add any value to the oud it self and when? I am sure many of you may have an opinion to share. Please do.

Here is one that I think it is very nice. I'd like to share with you all. Please share yours if you think it is special.

Kind Regards,

Hello Emad,

Thank you for sharing that beauty with us. A beautiful rosette adds both artistic and commercial value to an oud completing the aesthetic integrity of its elegance.

A rosette's design if had been drawn appropriately following certain aesthetic rules and cut by a famous inlay artist out of valuable material then its cost reaches to the oud's cost. This must be one of the main reasons of their rareness.

Warm regards.

The design of the rosettes: Arzu Tozlu, Selçuk University-Konya, Türkiye.
The design of the pick guard: Gülnur Duran, Marmara University-Istanbul.
Inlay artist: Salih Balakbabalar, Teacher of Traditional Fine Arts in Marmara University-Istanbul

The style of the designs is called "Rumi".

The material of the rosette is ivory, the pick guard was cut of turtle shell and inlayed ivory.

I wish I owned it! Very beautiful. And if the oud was made by Farul Turunz, I know it will sound as good as it looks!

Gorgeous. Nice to see a Turkish oud with such tasteful decoration. Can we see some pics of the beard and end cap, Faruk?

Personaly I love the Nahat style ivory or bone inlay in the middle. And what about the one where you have around 50 or more Maqamat inscribed in arabic all done in bone or Ivory.
Also there was a oud That was pictured in the most recent Salman Shukur interview in Iraq. I think it was made by Fadel. But in any case it had a stuning caligraphy rosette on it.

How nice,

I like the whole design.

The bridge is simillar to guitar bridge. but will this style bridge cause any loss of sound?

This is a special bridge with saddle. It has been designed by my partner Suat Çetincan to install under saddle type transducer on the oud.

Mr Turunz,
These rosettes and inlays are amazing and I think I can see why they are called "Rumi".

Emad,
I think the one Jameel made on his second oud is neat. It's mind-bogglingly detailed ( http://www.mikeouds.com/messageboard/viewthread.php?action=attachme... ).

Man, the ones Jameel made were super with no doubt. I do admir Jameels work in general not only rosettes.

I was hoping that members would join in and post their rosettes to compare and talk about this part of the oud too.

Sydney, I apologize for that. It was not my intention. I just wanted to make a very little contribution to your thread. I believe that many beautiful rosettes and inlay examples have been done. Jameel's inlays and rosettes are fantastic. I congratulate him.

I think rosettes no matter how beautiful they are can greatly distort the sound of an oud. if you picture the basic structure of an oud, rosettes serve two functions: 1. make the oud look nice. 2. make an oud more expensive. that just my personal opinion. regardless that turkish oud is stunningly beautiful!!

Distort have a negative connotation. I would prefer to say that they colours the sound. Also, rosettes act as a filter and make the oud less directional.
