request - tatyos effendi's sama'i husseini
Hi friends,
I just joined this forum - it's really a treasure, so thanks to Mike and to all of the regulars.
My request: I am learning to play Tatyos Effendi's sama'i husseini, and I was wondering if anyone could post a good recording of it. Thanks.
Also, last night in Jerusalem I heard a Moroccan oud player Badr Al-Asili (he was a guest performer with the Israeli Andalusian Orchestra), and he
blew my socks off. Does anybody here know of him? He was playing with Muhammad Warithi (sp?) on kamanja, who was also amazing.

In response to your sama'i husseini request, I have a recording of it at home (at school right now) but I'll get that up for you within the next few
days, unless another one of the other kind members (which is really everyone) can post it before that.
As for those who just want to listen to it played by an oudist that many of us are familiar with...

Thanks a lot to all for all of the replies - it's really a great help.
Who is that oudist? Does he have any albums? I quite enjoyed his interpretation of the sama'i. It sounds to me that maybe the chord work is a bit in
the Armenian style.
Anyway, thanks again, and I look forward to hearing the other version, TP21, as well as any others that people might have.

the more I work this samaii the more I appreciate its melodies and perfect modulations : I'm a fan of tayous compositions (samaii rast, pechref rast,
samaii husseini)

i didn't understand : you mean the beauty of the samaiis make your head spin from tarab or the difficulty of the rythm (by the way: 10/8 is more
correct) ??

Very interesting those different ways to play a same piece. The last give by honorable TP21 seem to be the most classical one and very pleasant to
play with for a young oudist. It could be good for all the members to continue in this way with different interpretations of a same piece. GO on great

I wanted to say that playing a rhythm in 10 is for me a source of physical pleasure ( .
And yes 10/8 is more correct.
But I learned a samaï in 10/4. It's a Samaï Lame composed by Abdul Wahab Bilal.
I am still searching for a recording of that one.
I'll post the sheet.

Husseini Semai Tatyos
I have several versions of this semai, all very beautiful, one by Udi Hrant (a classic).
Unfortunately they are bigger that 1MB and I believe this is not allowed.
I can e-mail them to people if they want them.
I will try to post here a couple of smaller versions.

I recommend you buy the entire CD from Traditional Crossroads, called: Works of Kemani Tatyos Efendi
I never used this service before, so I'm not sure it will work. If it does, I will do more and let you know.

I'm a little bit lost. Maqam husseyni has, starting D, the E 1/4 tone and the B1/4 tone.
Howeber all the sheets posted here have F# and B 1/4 tone.
Can anybody explain please ??
Also the other question posted by Daniel was about the moroccan oudist Badr Al-Asili. But seems we were so excited with the maqam husseyni that we
forgot him.

I believe the confusion arises because the score is probably from a Turkish source, and they score the notes differently (although they look like
Western music). In fact they are off by a fixed offset. For instance a B is written as E in Turkish scores, a D is written as G and so forth. So it
can be quite confusing. You may need to transcribe that score and make the changes before you can play it 'Western' style.

the answer my friend zalzal, is that the piece in transposed by a perfect 5th i.e. from D (natural tonic of maqam husseini ) to A.
(the key signature change accordingly)
that's because turkish like the highly tuned composition so they play nearly all the maqams trasposed by a 5th above the traditional and common
tonic.

I must say that after listening to everyone's posts I think I understand the piece a lot better. Actually, I noticed the same effect with this sama'i
as when I played tatyos effendi's sama'i hijaz kar kurd - at first it seems very confusing, and then after a while you begin to feel the internal
logic of the piece, and that's very rewarding.
I still find John Bilezekjian's rendition (thanks TP!) the most interesting (I still haven't figured out how he got to everything he got to), but the
Udi Hrant is of course a great find.
zalzal - very nice taqsim. And thanks for bringing up again my other question, but it might be simply that no one knows him. All I know is that he's
from Rabat, so if there are any Rabat natives here, maybe they would know of him.

Thak you for putting it so precisely. The word I was looking for was "transpose" and I said "transcribe". You can tell I'm not a musician. I just love
the oud and to play.

Maybe you can explain something to me. If you listen to the Hrant version, you will notice that after the 4th Hanna and the Taslim, instead of the
semai ending, he plays on on the same theme. I have never heard that on any other version, or indeed on any other semai. Is this common ? Are there
any other examples of such semais ?

thank you for your kind reply, about the extra part in the samaii after the 4th hana and the taslim I think it's an improvisation on the same maqam
and for which udi hrant had chosen the same energetic tempo (speed). so that we cannot easily dissociate it from the samaii.
it's common that after samaii, a musician improvise in the same maqam and improvisation is often more free and slow (relatively slow tempo).
any comments are welcome.
