help

i recently bought an oud and it arrived with a couple of yellow stains (water?)near the pickguard.
the guy who made it said to take a few drops of 95% alcohol put it on a cloth and clean the area a couple of times. i could only find 91% isopropyl alcohol - is that ok to use, or will that kill the wood?
any suggestions?

Victor,
I think 91% would work the same as 95
% but the question is should you be putting isopropyl alcohol on the face of the oud. I would pose that question directly to the good Dr. Oud

Alcohol

With all due respect, I would NOT put any liquid (alcohol or otherwise) on the face, especially if it's unvarnished. The result may be an even bigger smear anyway !

As Dr. Oud is fond of saying "just live with it". You'd be better off in the long run

Please do not touch your oud, live with it.

The face is considered to be the one of the most, if not the most important part of the oud. Do not ruin it simply because of some superficial markings.

I concur with everyone, any liquid will just spread the stain and nothing will remove it. The risk of damage to the face far outweighs any cosmetic appearance improvement. All my ouds are stained, smudged, smeared, dirty, discolored but dry and full toned. A "clean" oud simply hasen't been played. I've seen many ouds ruined by owners trying to "clean the face". Leave it alone and enjoy the sound, that's what the oud is for after all.

...i agree with Richard:

...in my flamenco days, when you were looking for used flaemnco guitars you looked for the most worn, beat up ones, as you know these were the ones that sounded so good, were well played and loved, and had a lot of vibe to them...soemthing that had endured tons fo late night sessions and had a history to tell!

ive also found with ouds that some stains mellow over time... some moths back on a gig someone dropped a glass of red wine and it splashed on to the oud face...it eventually faded and mellowed, and istnt really noticeable too much now. ..and its a bit of character!
