Ports on ouds?

Has anyone ever seen an acoustic port on an oud?
I have a 19th century Di Megglio mandolin and a 20th century classical guitar by Stephen Connor (popularised by Ruck) that incorporate ports into the (upper) sides of the instruments. Ports on guitars allow air to escape at the upper bouts, increasing the resonance, and also allows the player to hear themselves better (If you ever get the opportunity to play one, stick a lampshade on your head, you'll hear yourself in sterio...and look reeeeal cool ;)
It would be an interesting experiment on an oud; especially on ones that seem to project most of their sound away from the players.

Any thoughts from the makers out there?

i've seen mandolins from vietnam with "ports" in them - i didn't know what they were called. if they're put in the instrument to cause better - un-inhibited - vibration, they might make those metal cages, mandolin players sometimes screw onto the backs of their instruments, redundant ... no bad thing.

i've never seen an oud or a lute for that matter, with ports. i would think their light-weight and shell like structure would be compromised with holes in their flanks.

... just a guess.

a lamp shade is silly ... a stetson cowboy hat, however ...

I accidentaly came across something of the sort in Thabet Al-Basry's forum.

He made it in a generic hollow ear shape on the upper side of the oud, with the intention to help those tuning their instrument while entertaining a crowd.

Not sure if I can find it again, though.
