my first oud

got mixes feelings about it there are some things that could have been made better abd seems like this instrument wasn't taken good care of as there are some surface scratches. it was bought in Tripoli and made in egypt. there's something written on the inside but i'll have to ask my dad what it says. he paid 400 $ for it. tell me what you think . will restring it and post some sound clips of the open strings. hope at least it's worth the money .

So far, you are off to a good start. Do you have a five course oud or six course? If you have a sixth course (low bass string), you could tune that to B, C, Or D. Common oud tunings for six course (eleven strings) ar BEADGC, CFADGC, CEADGC, DEADGC, and DGADGC. Five course (ten strings) are EADGC, FADGC, and GADGC. If you have questions, let me know. I'll be in San Antonio until Sunday, and return on Jan 9.

thanks William that's very helpful. I did read a lot about tuning but that confused me even more as i didn't know what to pick. Decided on EADGC cause the oud is arabic and i think this is a common way to tune. Do you happen to know arabic?

The oud is a six course one and i could add another set of strings to be tuned as lowest. I used Pyramid strings and there was a set of five. what string do i use for the sixth one if i'm to add it?

For the sixth string, if you have a standard Arabic oud, you would want to add the bass string. You can get DAdario and LaBella strings for six course oud. I don't know Arabic, but yes, the forths tuning EADGC is a common tuning. I use that forths tuning on my Turkish oud, and my Algerian oud hybrid called a mandol.
