Abdel Hamid is also one of the nicest people you will ever deal with- I spoke with him at the Arab-Fest 2003 in Milwaukee after a performance (hip hop, and he liked it!). He makes beautiful Tablas with fish skin as well-

I have this one:
http://www.larkinam.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_MOT015_A_Professional+Eg...
It sounds great but it's pretty heavy. Don't know if you could get it shipped in time for your gig.

My wife has one of these, which is much lighter and pretty decent sounding (but we paid much less):
http://www.x8drums.com/tambourine-glen-velez-p/ta-1309-gv.htm

When I was at the Gawaret El Fan store in Cairo last November, I looked for riqqs but they ones they had weren't any good (very cheap cymbals). I would imagine that this E-Bay one is similar.

Good luck!

I'm sure you can take them off - getting them back on to stay may be harder!

I have one really cheap riqq that the cymbals fall off of everytime I play it - there's a nail that they are mounted on and it keeps slipping out of the hole. Once the nail is removed to change the cymbals it might be hard to get it to stay put without some further work.

The cooperman riq is nice, but get the 'artist' version. I haven't checked out their hammered jingles, so I don't know whether they're worth the extra dough.

By the way, the remo riqqs (especially the Layne Redmond) are pretty bad, IMO.

Okay..my 2 cents on riq's.

For low maintenance get a Lanye Redmond riq, made by Remo. It's got a decent tone, and good cymbals -- no it doesn't sound as good as a Kevork, and it's not tunable -- and has a plastic head, but I've abused mine for years and its still doing fine. The shell is slightly deeper than the traditional mosaic/fishskin riq's, but if you're just starting out, it might be just what you need.

I also have a couple of trad. egyptian inlaid riqs with fishskin heads, that sound great - I got lucky they had good cymbals on em. and they've held up well over the last 15-20 years. I've played the cooperman riqs, and they're light for a tunable model, I've seen the Kevork's, they're works of art..and the Glen Velez models have a scalloped edge that I don't like at all, but some do. I had to play a tunable Glen Velez model for a whole night and for half the gig my hand was going numb -- it wasn't comfortable at all !! You have to try em out though...these might be just what you like. Good luck and have fun.

I think that better then buying something that isnt a riq to play it like one. They have these goat skin non tunable riqs made in syria. They sell them for 10$ at my arabic food superstore I tried one the other day and I was really suprised. Also I get acces to syrian made synthetic skind tunable riq made of bamboo wood they sound pretty good the only thing is that the weight of it makes it a little hard to play but it makes your hands stronger so that when you play on a kevork its like playing on a cloud. I'll post a video for both soon.

Hi Samir,

The 10 buck riq gets my vote, the cymbals are a bit on the weak side but for 10 dolars who cares -- great for the price !! Very sweet sounding !

The Syrian one sounds like the aluminum one I got about 15 years ago or so...they weigh like 2 tons, and really have a bite that cuts through all but the thickest of synth ensembles.

Thanks for the clips..take care..Paul

I just got a new Abdelhamid Alwan Riqq. Although I am a beginner, I have listened to a variety of riqqs and I can say that it has a very natural sound and isn't loud, so I think it is ideal for a smaller classical style ensemble. Nice clean construction and seems quite sturdy. The price is interesting as well.
