I have only ever recorded one CD track with oud, and I played it fingerstyle in my own way, not traditional. You can hear it on my website here: http://www.rmguitar.info/mp3.htm
- scroll down to a track called 'Nine' - it is an accompaniment to a poem recited by its author - pretty heavy stuff about pro-democracy activists
being hanged in Nigeria. The oud part was completely improvised with only one run-through before hand. I'm really pleased with the performance, but it
will not please everyone...

I wouldn't call it an adiction, but an extreme overflow of love for the music. But then again, isn't music the perfect drug? One with plesent side
efects?

Mr Google was speachless when I begged him to enlighten my ignorance about "azeri kshkarjeh", I was more lucky with "Liuto Attiorbato" wich returned
the vision of a gorgeous 14 course 2 head creature (or I was under instrumental LSD)
With 2 ouds (Matta and Bitar), 2 guitars (Ibanez and Tanglewood) one damaged bouzouk and a mini midi keyboard, I don't even qualify for light hashish.
But hanging out with guys like you I may be dragged into trying the hard stuff like Baalbaki Menjairah (kind of rababah that can stimulate the urge of
killing a musician) or Mejwez of Deir Al Ahmar (a mizmar capable of producing the sound of a thousand Mosquitos Choir)
SERIOUS: Rob this a great piece, I love it.

Rob - I made all of the stringed instruments that I have (except for two of the concert guitars) for my own use and research. The two vihuelas are
scaled down, less decorative, versions of the so called "Paris Vihuela", the only recognised surviving vihuela that I had reference to at the time
(1970's). I do not use them any more as I find it more practical to play the vihuela repertoire on lute rather than attempting to switch instruments
all of the time. The lute, of course, was used in Spain contemporary with the vihuela.
The liuto attiorbato is a copy - or rather based upon - a museum drawing of the original, as it will not be made from ivory or be as decorative as the
surviving original. The project has been sitting in my workshop awaiting completion for several years now as life and other work takes precedence.
Your research is correct ALAMI, the instrument is a double pegbox lute with extended bass strings and a total of 13 or 14 courses - intended for the
Italian solo lute repertoire of the early 17th C.

Wow, some serious sickos here... Maybe I should of asked how many instruments do you play and HOW GOOD ARE YOU AT PLAYING THEM, what concerns me about
"spreading out" too much is sacrificing quality for quantity, but if you have enough time to practice it needn't be the case.

Well, for sure, Masel, I don't play all those instruments equally well - but who said I have to? What matters ultimately is whether or not you have
found your own voice. If you have, I believe you can find it in many instruments, and with only a few notes, maybe even just one.

Rob's last comment about finding your voice even in one single note reminded me of an old Turkish folktale about the medieval wit Nasrettin Hoca. He
was seen one day sitting in the marketplace playing the same note on his saz. A passerby asked him why he was playing the same note again and again,
and remarked that other musicians move up and down the neck playing a variety of notes. Nasrettin Hoca replied: "The other musicians are moving up and
down the neck because they are looking for the right note. I have found it."

In my haste, I overlooked a few more:
- recorder, Renaissance style - wooden, modern reproduction.
- 2 maracas, Mexican - modern (but colourful).
- mouth harp (with fitted felt lined case)
- 8 assorted brass instrument mouthpieces.
- a japanned tinplate fog horn, 19th C - copy
- a monochord - modern reproduction.
- a musical saw - slightly rusted, with infinitely variable pitch.
There may be others but enough is enough already.

The comment about the fact that with two ouds, bouzouk, and keyboard not qualifying for light hashish is not necessarily true. The oud, and
instruments relating to the oud, lute, mondol, and the likes of anything with double courses of nylon strings, can be enough of an equivalent to a
hash buzz. However, I relate the sounds of these instruments to that good feeling you get after that taste of a good cup of coffee, or a good shisha
smoke.

What about using hash oil as oud polish ?
or cedar resine as glue (or just as a coating inside) the oud will smell forever.
I have a cedar wood piece that still smell since I was a kid. The legend says that ancient phoenician sailors sailing back home used to smell cedars
before seeing the shore.
Wll, what is "the Greek Rebets from the 1930s??"

Thanks Nikos, it is funny I didn't know of this "tradition" of old drug-related songs in Greece.
In Lebanon there is a tradition of Arak (same as ouzo, Raki, pastis) related singing :"Zajal" it is an improvised duel between 2 or more singers they
drink arak and play a daff,
however I have a rare "Hash song" (early seventies) with just oud and percussions.

Usually, you're good at one instrument, and for the others.... well you do the job, .............Who needs a virtuoso on the other wiered
instrumet.
When I worked in soundtrack making, you usually need the sound of a less known instrument only to be present, and accurate, you really dont have to be
really good to do the job.

Ha ha ..... rembetika and the drug tradition in the 30s Greece
There is this really old song, been re-recorded by many rembetika groups, but I refer to the original recording from the 30s. Its called "i Eleni
zondokhira".... Has anyone heard that particular recording??? I've always thought the singer was sooooo high! with his really laid back lyrics...
Maybe there's a link here, the dude must have rocked up to the recording studio completeley hashed out
