My New Oud from Sandi / Cankaya (pics)
I just received this from Ankara, it was made by the Saadettin Sandi / Cankaya company. It's just a student model, but it plays very nicely:
It's funny how several instruments that I have played over the years come together in the oud: classical/nylon string guitar; 12 string; and fretless
bass...

Very nice piece of artwork indeed.
I like it... the wood is so nice, is it walnut or what?
And the finishing is good too.
Congratulations Paul enjoy your oud.
But what about the sound? I wish you attached some sound clips so we can know what kind of sounds this beautiful oud makes.

I don't know what kind of wood it is... perhaps mahogany? The finishing is indeed very good for an instrument of this range.
I have not done any recording of it yet; as so far I really can't play much on it. The sound is very full, easily as loud as my larger guitars, the
bass is particularly resonant.
I'll try to do some recording of it soon, and will post a clip.

Yes, very nice.
The bowl has very nice wood.
And the 'non black' pickguard, i like it.
Could you post a picture of the end of the fingerboard where it arrive to the soudboard. What is that fine line?

The line at the fingerboard/soundboard joint is a thin inlay of binding wood. The surfaces are flat.

I have the same model GK 15
after one year of playing it sounds very nice
i use aqulia nylecut light-tension strings on it.
the bowl is made of mahagony
i have another model from sandi the MKA 25 with bowl made of paduk and walnut
and ebony fingerboard but with the same size it sounds differend
enjoy your new instrument

I was wondering, how would you describe the difference in sound between the mahogany bowl oud and your paduk MKA 25? Louder/softer? More
bass/treble?

the MKA 25 sounds more "clear" and smoother
with more bass (more pro.) and it is much easyer to play
but i love to play on the GK 15 as well
it depents on the mood sometimes
the MKA 25 has Ebony Pegs and is easyer to tune it

Interesting; would you say easier to play because of the action, or the neck profile? Or something else?

i think it is both the neck and action
I bought the MKA 25 first
I use it only at home and for recordings
and the GK 15 for live-performing
(the GK 15 is a little louder than the MKA 25)
and with the new Aquila-Nylcut light-tension-set
it sounds so great
i love to have both ouds
