Ornamentation...

Hello everybody..

This seems like a fantastic place for all things oud..and a nice community so greetings to you all.

I am hoping some of you might be able to help me out with a few ornamentation issues...

I am finding it rather tricky to understand some of the more subtle ornamentations in the Turkish and Armenian styles of playing through listening alone as some parts are so fast that I cannot really grasp what's going on!.
I was wondering if anybody has or knows of any notated examples of common ornaments, combinations and variations.

(I have ud metodu..just cant find a Turkish-English dictionary ;)

I will try to explain the sound of the ornaments that caught my attention..the one that I really liked (and seems to be quite common) is a thing that sounds like a subtle glissando rising up to about the 4th - 5th degree of a makam followed by a series of descending notes that I think use the carpma technique finishing with some other kind of finger wizardry that sounds again like carpma (perhaps fast triplets) that creates a shimmering/rolling tapping sound that is on occasion almost inaudible but gives such wonderful colour to the main melody notes.. particularly in taksimia...

It might seem a bit weird that i can describe it and not figure out how to play it..but some of the finer touches escape me!

I will try and post some audio clips asap....

I would really appreciate any help with this.
thanks... Ash...:)

PS..Are the any Oud players out there who are living in London England? (might write a separate post for this) but if so drop me a line...

Welcome aboard Ashley,

I cannot comment much on the topic, but I know that this very topic was addressed at least once before.

342 views and only 7 replies!!!!!! 3 of them from me!!!!!
lol come on dont be shy! surely someone knows of some links, books, techniques etc etc..
or is this a big mystery?

(waiting with twitching fingers...:airguitar: )

by the way..if any one is up for making a structured on-line lesson thread that would be great
we could work out how to do it in stages for beginners, intermediate and pro's alike in a sort of non linear fashion that could be used as reference or as a method of learning...everybody could contribute with their own level of knowledge and perhaps some of the more experienced players amongst us could moderate the thread to make sure that the information was accurate, coherent and well structured..
If anybody fancies trying this out then post me a reply..If enough people get involved we could really make something good that would be helpful to everybody...

Let me know what you all think..depending on replies maybe I will start a new thread, but obviously we need to plan it quite well first...

Happy playing

Ash

The Redhouse series of dictionaries is the most accurate - the larger volumes actually have accurate music terminology translated.

Hi guys

Thanks Eliot I will check out those dictionaries, hope all is going well in Istanbul :)

Samir, I checked out the learn to play section but I was thinking of creating a more in depth lesson thread..would you be interested in contributing? I was hoping that some of the more experienced players could come together and write some advanced lessons...
