Hi,

This is not Arabic. it is either tukrish or kurdish or some where in between. because they use arabic letters in their language.

From where you got this oud, any way?

Cheers

Well the date is in Arabic. It is in Old Syrian-style months, I believe it says "Kanoun Aoual" which is December, and the full date is December 12, 1926.

Pretty old piece. Nice.

And it could be Turkish. I believe I see the words "Tarafendan Aamal" in the first line. Turkish used Arabic characters until about 1928.

Could it also be Haik or Haig ousta? If so, Haik/Haig would be an Armenian name.

There was an Armenian oud maker named Haik based in Damascus in the 1920s. I've seen photos of one of his ouds from 1924.
Any chance we can see the rest of the oud?
What does aamal mean?

I think that Hayek is not the right transcription because it is clear that the first letter of the name is "Heh" like the H in Happy and not "7eh" as for the common arabic name 7ayek, I believe it is closer to the armeninan names like Hakbek Usta or even Hampik Usta (as B and P can be written the same)
"Tarafanda A'mal" could also mean "great work of"

I still say this is probably the Haig (or Haik) that was based in Damascus. I don't know anything else about him, but he went by just that name. I am not referring to the same maker as you are Faladel. Haik (Haig) is a fairly common name.
Any chance you can show us what the rest of the oud looks like?

Hello guys,

The label is in old Turkish. Says:
First two lines:
" HAYK USTA TARAFINDAN IYMAL"
" EDILMISTIR"
Third line is his address:
"ORTAKOY DEREBOYU NUMARO 31"
Last line is a date:
"12 KANUN-U EVVEL 1926"

In English:
First two lines: "Made by Hayk usta"
Third line is an address in Istanbul Ortakoy DEREBOYU is a litle neigbourhood in Ortakoy which is a suburb of Istanbul on bosforus at Europian side rigth under the Bosforus Bridge.
Last line is: December 12, 1926
So the label says oud was made in Istanbul by an Armenian oud maker. The looks of the top is classical Turkish style of that era.
Dincer
