Hi !

Despite the fact that this is an oud forum I would like to ask the readers if you know of any qanun method.

Thanks,

Beautiful music and great playing. I know very little about kanuns - I didn´t know you can play vibrato on those like the player in the clips. Thanks for the links!

Hi Dubai 244,

I think the instrument you are thinking about is kantele (´kannel`in Estonia, and the same name is used interchangeably i Finland, too). Lots of information and links here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kantele

The oldest type of instrument has only five strings but the modern concert kanteles have more than thirty. Originally string were twisted horsehair that gives a peculiar raspy tone, but later brass strings have been used and nowadays steel is almost universally used. Concert kanteles have mechanism to change string tone, to play accidentals and to play in different keys. (well, no quarter tones ;) ). This was invented in the 1920s and was inspired by the lever mechanism in concert harps.

What is nice about Finnish folk music life is that different kinds of kanteles are all used, and the ancient 5-string kantele is very much alive and well. Some musicians get awful lot of music out of only five strings...

Haluk makes a kanun in 2-3 months when ordered. He was sent my cousin in Indonesia last year a very nice professional kanun with a methode book and a set of spare set Dupont brand
strings. The kanun was in special hard case, arrived safely in tune.My cousin was surprised very much that how the kanun arrived in tune after a very long voyage from Turkey to Indonesia.
I will order also when I have enough money.

Regards.

The methode book is in Turkish,I don't know if he has in English.

Oh no!
That instrument is a toy between the Kanun. As my opinion kanun is the best and amazing instrument in the world.
See Göksel Baktagir in excellent performance with kanun:

Sorry Dubai244, I don´t have sound clips myself, I´m not a kantele player. But the links in that wikipedia article probably contain some. Here are some clips for a large kantele, two for a regular kantele and a third for an electric one. Scroll down about two thirds of the page:

http://virtual.finland.fi/netcomm/news/showarticle.asp?intNWSAID=27...

I´d like to show you a soundclip of the primitive horsehair-strung kantele but didn´t find one just now. I´ll post a link if I find one.

all the best, Arto

I found many videos for Kantele in Youtube.com, has really nice sound and variable in shaps.

By way way, indians are using similar instrument to guitar and they play it exact similar way as Kantele.

Cheers

ahmet meter is also an outstanding kanun player in a more traditional style, try to check him out too. i haven't seen any really good clips of him on youtube but here's a couple decent ones:

with mehmet bitmez:

nice taksim but the singer is not up to par:

i have been studying kanun the last couple months and i have to say it is an excellent way to learn the makams because it forces you to learn the pitch of each note correctly. of course you need a good teacher for it (which i have!)
