and then the translation
but take first note of the following:

1- the pal and this kind of ctalking to someone and narrowing the story to him is very common in arabic classical poeetry, so the pal has nothing to do with the story

2- the translation emphasizes the meaning rather than the words; in that meaning that it gives the exact sense but not always the exact word translation.

3- it's despair that makes him say that he doesn't want him anymore, he's not schizofreniac;)

4- here's talken about a "he"; this is also common in arabic poetry and has no special connotation; it's the poem's structure that directs the words' being brought together

5- heavenly is not the exact translatin, but in the poem he talks about a kind of flower which is beleived to exist in heaven, that's why.

:bowdown::bowdown:
Thanks a lot dandana!!!!
Do you think is possible to make a transliteration like in the lamma bada post??
like this:
Lamma bada Yatathanna
Aman' Aman' Aman' Aman' Aman
Houbbi jamalouk al fatah
Aman' Aman' Aman' Aman' Aman
Waadi wa ya Hirati
Waadi wa ya Hirati
Man li nasi shak wati
Fil houbbi min lawaati
Illa malik oul jamal
;)

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought that I could add something to further an understanding in meaning.

Though a literal translation of fog an-nakhel would be be "on top of/above the palm tree," it is an Iraqi metaphor that translates to the English metaphor "on top of the world", e.g. extremely happy. It is used in Iraqi Arabic as a reply to "how are you?" (Iraqi Ar. = shlonak - what is your color).

To me, because the lyrics of the song appear quite immediately, it is very much strengthened when preceded by an engaging mawwal, qasida, or taqsim.

Regards
