strings for 57cm bashir-style?

Hi All, after trawling through the forum via the search box, I am still looking for recommendations for strings to suit 57cm floating bridge oud. (not enough hours in a day!) Tuning F A d g c f . I'm not real sure about the tension I'm after in technical terms but I like slinky but not slack. Sent email to Jameel, who hopefully will be able to help. I've contacted Matthius, his recommendation of the sets he puts together of Aquila's is actually based on 60cm, has anyone tried them on a 57cm? How did they feel? I have no first hand knowledge of Pyramid or Aquila as nobody seems to sell them in Australia!!! So please if you want to say "get (brand X) strings" could you please be a bit more specific regarding guages / composition etc , hi all you Aussie oudies, what is your solution? P.S. I've finally found a lute maker here who can supply strings but need to know what to ask for, thanks.

Hi Sazi, I have also newly asked this question to the user jdowning, in the "pyramid lute strings" thread.
Cheers! Hope we'll get a definitive answer.

I am using (FAdgcf set) Aquila Nylgut strings on 57cm bashir oud. Sound is better than with other brands I had and tension is right even on 435Hz tuning. You can email aquila@aquilacorde.com for price and shipping cost and pay via PayPal. Shipping time is about a week.

Hello Sazi and Oud freak,

in my PDF - file aboud oud strings which can be found in my download center, you'll find the SET OUD P10. This is the set which Naseer Shamma plays and which he often baught from me. Furthermore I have a lot of clients, who got this set from me and uses it with great success and satisfaction. It is calculated for a string length of ~58 cm

I can send this set all around to where you live.

Regards Matthias

Standard tension. F435 to F439 sounds better (to my ears). But, what is good for ones ears or particular oud may not be good in other situation. So, there is no definitive answer.

Thanks for the info, greatly appreciated. Yes my ears agree with yours on the slightly lower tension tuning, (which is why I asked) bit warmer tone somehow, the oud sounds sweeter. Hard to put into words!

Hey Sazi,

I have tried Pyramid lute strings (purchased directly from Pyramid in Germany). They happily ship to Australia.
But my preferred strings are Aquila.

As you know, my ouds are 58.5 and tuned a fourth below yours. I use the standard tension Aquila Nylguts for Arabic tuning (cfadgc). They are designed for 60 cm, but work fine at 58.5. I figure that the 1.5 cm is about a semi-tone difference. But as these strings are reasonably high tension, they work well.

I would imagine the normal tension Turkish set would work well for you.

I used to buy my Aquilas from <roy-cone (at) earthlink.net>.
He is the proprietor of http://www.ukuleleworld.com

But I now buy from Jameel Abraham. His prices are competitive and his expert advice is reliable (as are his shipping times to Oz). http://www.khalafoud.com

Regards,

Greg

OK good people, thanks heaps, this info and the fantastically detailed e-mail from Melbourne (thanks man, sorry to take up so much of your oud-playing time!) is enough for me to string my oud to my satisfaction, big UP to all:)

Thanks Greg, Jameel says he would have to order strings in for me, but I am currently working with Ian Watchorn in Melbourne to compose a custom set, on the recommendation of Forum member Melbourne, who was incredibly helpful, I'll keep everyone posted as to the results...
