Are there any good books on Maqams

Hi All
I hope this topic hasn't been discussed before (I searched before posting).

Are there any good books on Maqams (over and above the info on http://www.maqamworld.com)?

I already have the Cameron Powers book, but it doesn't have the information on the Sayr and modulation.

I found a book on Turkish Makams though,
"Makam: Modal Practice in Turkish Art Music" by Karl Signell, but unfortunately its out of print (ISBN 10: 0913360074
ISBN 13: 9780913360071).
The bookstores in Cairo were lacking any good sources on the topic?
Any advice?

I bought the Scott L. Marcus dissertation, "Arab Music Theory in the Modern Period," and had it bound. It's a wonderful resource on maqams, modulation, you name it.

Search the site for how to obtain it. It's worth every penny.

Thanks Meursault
I downloaded the dissertation but didn't have a good look at it yet, I guess that would do for me for now. I just hope that someone will write a book like the ones published on Indian Ragas. My ney teacher in Cairo is in the process of writing one in English (with emphasis on ney playing) and he intends to publish it on his website. Will keep the forum informed. His brother, a professional oudist, by the way works with Nidaa Abu Mrad in Lebanon.

I have seen Signell's book in Turkey in the last couple of years, in a paperback reprint in English. Two good bookshops to try in Istanbul are Istanbul Kitapcisi and Mephisto.

The Wikipedia entry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makam

lists recent reprints of Signell's book in both English and Turkish.

Jack

Thanks for the tip.

I actually got in touch with Karl Signell a few months back, I guess he lives nearby in Maryland and he was extremely helpful. He gave give me the name and numbers of Usul books. I then actually bought the CD from that publishing house, I think in it was in September 2006.

However, They neither sent the CD nor was I refunded. I just lost hope in getting through to them them, they don't respond no matter how many times i send emails and leave voice messages.

Its not about the money, its actually about the book, I cant seem to find it anywhere.

C'est la vie

If you are interested in Aleppian Maqamat, try:

http://www.alsiadi.com

It notates and plays the maqams and many short pieces especially the dulab and the qad, which let you read and hear at the same time.

The microtone/quarter note/coma are played in the Aleppian way.
