Mandolin player decision: Lavta or Oud?
Greetings all. I am a mandolin player and am headed to Istanbul in a couple weeks to see my daughter who lives there (2nd visit there). I plan to
spend a day exploring music shops in the Galip Dede/Beyoglu area.
On my last trip I purchased a short necked baglama Saz (from Elvis), and this time my interest is in coming back with either a Lavta or an Oud (as
well as some percussion). Anyway, I figured that being a mandolin player the lavta would be easier to learn due to the fifths tuning (CGDA) and the
frets. I am not a guitar player so I assume the oud would be a bit more difficult to pick up and run with.
Musically, I am interested in applying Jewish, Sephardic, Turkish, and other middle east music styles to the instrument. Any suggestions on which
instrument might make more sense for me would be most appreciated.

As a fellow mandolinist, I think the lavta might be a good transition step on your way to the oud. I assume you'll be making future trips to visit
your daughter. If so, I'd suggest a lavta this time and an oud next time. If you don't think you'll be back for awhile, maybe get one of each!

If you opt to lavta I recommend that you go to the Veysel workshop.

just my two cents...i wouldnt buy an instrument in beyoglu, too expensive and mostly not great...go see master oudmaker ramzan calay in kadikoy across
the bosphorous on the asian side and he can direct you to the best instruments for the price...u2u me for his address etc.
