The best drum-maker in the world (IMHO)
Hi,
This is a plug for a drum-maker who is really special; it's only oud-related in that his drums would make superb accompaniment for the world's finest
ouds.
Robin Shackleton of Sylvan Temple drums (http://www.sylvantemple.ca/) is an artisan who makes everything individually, by hand, and imbues every instrument with love and a bit of magic.
The materials he uses are unique (sustainably harvested woods, many of which are not common, some only found on Vancouver Island). His designs range
from traditional to truly unique (I bought a tuneable, jingled, snare on/off Bendir.. maple and yew wood.. one-of-a-kind.)
If anyone's interested, I can post audio/video of my drum, let me know..

Is wood a better material then Ceramic or Alluminum for darbukas?
I know it works for Djembes etc.... but I think it would take away from the desired sound for such instruments... although untill I hear one its pure
speculations on my part.
I would like to hear one. Is there a sample online?
Also... since we are on the topic.
Kevork who is known to arguably makes the best middle eastern percussion instruments uses mostly different metals and some ceramic.
Every professional derbake, riq and Katem players that you can see on tv uses his instruments.

Ceramic is traditional, and very nice for tone, but very fragile. Cast aluminum is good for volume, strength, and can sound nice too (depends what
kind of sound you like).
But me, I'm a wood lover - most of us are, I'm sure - and the beauty of these drums is all about wood. They sound amazing too.
To me, the difference between these and Kevork's (undoubtedly the top middle-Eastern maker) is that these are crafted pretty much one at a time by one
guy, and each drum is unique.. there are no two identical. It's artistry rather than factory production (even though small factories like Kevork's no
doubt make great drums).
Plus, if you have a vision for a custom drum, ask Robin.. he'll make you whatever your imagination can come up with.
I'll post a clip of my jingled bendir in a short while..

Gil , that is a sweet drum . however smash its broken lol.
reb , his guys drums look amazing. i love the all wood sound.i have all differ drums and sizes but still did not find the one in my dreams.

Wow, I've never seen a crystal drum before, much less a crystal loudspeaker! I wonder if that glass speaker resonates equally in all frequencies or if
there's a certain pitch that makes it vibrate like crazy..
Anyways, I uploaded a bendir demo (hastily recorded) to YouTube. Here is it:

Incidentally I also uploaded a clip from a concert I played last November, I play a taqsim on electric oud, and the tune is Umm Kulthum's Alf Leila Wa
