oud and cello
Hello all- I'm trying to locate any youtube clips or webclips that have just solo oud and cello ( or oud/cello/violin) collaboration playing
Arabic/Turkish or closely related musics. I've come up with one but the quality was not very good.
Anybody have anything on this?

I don't know of anything which fits this exactly, but I was given a CD by a friend who is an Indian classical music aficionado of a cellist called
Matthew Barley with two young Sarod players, and with one track with Amjad Ali Khan. I haven't really listened to it but I just dug it up and gave it
a go now. My quick impression is that, like a lot of 'fusion' music, it's not up to much, with the great Amjad Ali jamming away in a world of his own
(though toning down his virtuosity to avoid completely taking over) and the cellist sneaking in every now and then to say hello.
It's not that I think these types of collaborations necessarily can't work, but I do think both artists have to establish some kind of a common
language, which isn't easy and takes a much deeper understanding than is possible in a feelgood jam. Otherwise you just end up with the lowest common
demominator, with the Western musician jamming away in what he/she considers and 'efnic' style.
Having said that, I think of all Western instruments, the cello is one of the most suited to playing in other musical styles. One pointer you could
try and follow up is that both Jamil and Munir Bashir were very accomplished cellists - you might find some old recordings of them.
As for Matthew Barley, it appears he's quite an experimentalist so if he hasn't tried an oud collaboration yet, it's quite likely he will!

PPS, I just remembered two examples: Haytham Safia plays some quite interesting stuff with a cellist.
Also, there's Anwar Brahem with a cellist on this record.
And another thing: if you want to hear some really innovative and quirky use of a cello, try the Henry Threadgill Sextett - Rag, Bush and All.
Fantastic album. (No oud though - sorry :shrug

Hey Dave and Katakofka- thanks for your feedback. I think the oud and cello (just as oud and violin) ought to be able to create something musical
that would be worth a listen. We see musicians from all walks of life now collaborating on various instruments with many nice results. The oud and
cello, both being fretless, are quite capable of playing Indian ragas, Arabic maqams, as well as European Renaissance or a tasteful mix of it all. I
would like to try this, inshallah, if I can meet any cello players here who feel the same.
The Bashir angle is very interesting, and if anyone out there has something with them with oud and cello it would be nice to hear how they approched
it. Munir Bashir was very interested in world musics, and a very fine oud player.
"nothing ventured, nothing gained"...then go down to the pub.

Hi Matt, please don't take that as criticism of your plans - it sounds very interesting and I wish you the best of luck. I think us amateurs should be
allowed to dabble in crossover experiments - it's fun, and I've tried a bit myself, though the results are limited by my technique. It's just when people market records of "fuzhun" attempts which leave me cold that I
question a bit. Anyway, as we always say, I don't have to buy it. Actually, one thing I want to try soon and will hopefully post, is a bit of an
oud-lute swap session. I'm working on trying to work out an oud version of a lute/vihuela piece, perhaps one with less complex polyphony from the
Spanish tradition, like O guardame las vacas, on the oud. Then I want to work out a polyphonised (?) version of a simple oud piece like bint el
shabaliya on the lute. The two aren't that far apart in essence. Watch this space.
Good luck with the cello and post the results. Another thing occurred to me - the stuff Adel does with oboe would probably work with cello.

hey Dave, no worries, I appreciate all your feedback. Do you mean clarinet with
the Adel reference? His CD Kanza has a lovely mix of oud, clarinet, riqq/darbouka, and his wife on vocals. Have you heard it? Does he also do one with
oboe?
good luck with the lute/vihuela thing.
I'm hoping that someone out there has something on a solo oud and cello collaboration to post here.

As Dave pointed out Haytham Safia has a CD called Promises. The quartet playing is made up of oud, oboe, cello and percussion. Sent you an e-mail with

Mathew: check that group, Hewar. They had 2 performance in Kennedy Center at the Millenium stage here in DC. The group in the February 27, 2004
performance was composed from a Oud, cello, clarinet, vocal, percussions.

Another hint, cinuçen tanrıkorur used to have a cello in his ensemble; I would do a youtube search for cinuçen tanrıkorur.
