Pickups
Can anyone recommend a pick up to install in an already built oud? What gets the most natural sound without comprimising the sound and structure of
the oud?

I have K&K Twin spots installed in my Oud... Nice tone for a piezio... but I'm also running them through a LR Baggs Paracoustic DI and a Fishman
Aura pedal....

I would recommend a Schertler Dyn-G. A simple bug that sticks on the sounbord with removable putty. It has the most natural sound of any pickup I have
tried and has the advantage that you can use it for all your acoustic instruments!

I have tried a putty type pick up on a classical guitar and I could not get the putty off. They told me to use lighter fluid. On a surface with
polish I would consider that, even French polish, but ouds have no polish the surface. You are ok with puttihg putty on your oud? I dont know if I
would be OK with that.

The putty is definitely not the type that you need lighter fluid to remove! It is fine on my oud. I'm sure it would be ok for any oud, but don't hold
me to that!

Please DO NOT USE this kind of gummy putty on the sensitive face of the oud.Especially if there is unfinished.
There are 2 ways to attach this kind of pickups.
a)on the bridge (if it is big enough) there is no problem and the sound is better,
b)if you have to put it on the face then only with these (pic attached) Tesa Powerstrips.I have used them many years without any problem on the
unfinished oud face

Friend of mine - who should know - told me that florist's clay makes a good stickum for piezos and whatnot. He's a serious repair guy, and pro
musician, so I kind of listen to him ... it might be worth trying.
(Although I seem to recall that plasticenes etc. have oil in them - not what I'd want on a bare-wood top, personally.)
Waiting for empirical research results ...

Thank you everyone! I have researched the Schertler pickups and I think I'm going to try the Dyn-G. Too expensive and invasive to put an internal
pickup in an oud in my opionion, and once it's in, and you don't like it, there's nothing you can do about it. Good suggestions. About the Tesa
power strips....I will try. I hope it doesn;t remove the wood! I tried these on a wall and when I removed them it took the paint. Maybe I didn't
not remove correctly, but it seems like the best solution.

Shareen i have to say that i used the powerstripes only when i played live and after the concert i removed them immidiately and i never saw a problem
on the face.
But i still prefer to stick the pickup (i use akg c411 and i am very happy with it) on the bridge of the oud with these removable puttys because i
think the sound is better..

i search on internet the c411 but i found two models the PP and the L
with a difference of price ( 83 and 116 euros)
do you know the differences? what type do you have? do you use a preamp?DI?

the L version has a mini-xlr cable and you need an extra battery supply unit the AKG B29L ( http://www.musicstore.de/de_DE/EUR/AKG-B-29-L-Phantomspeiseadapter/... )
.That costs 50 € .So a total of 130 €
The PP version u can use it alone because it has a normal XLR (micro) cable.
I use the L version. the advantages are that you have a volume pad, 2 inputs (so you can combine the 411 with another micro from akg for example a
lavalier) , and a mic-line signal output.
My whole setup is : akg c411L -> B29L -> zoom a2 (effect pedal for acoustic) -> Fishman Pro-EQ platinum (preamp-di b0x- equalizer - notch
filter)....

I researched the AKG 411 you are talking about but it seems like just a small condensor mic and not a pick up. Am I missing something?

Shareen, The C411 is a condensor mic and therefore needs to connect to a mixer (or pre-amplifier) with an inbuilt 48V power supply (unless you buy the
dedicated power supply that Nikos uses). Whilst it is a condenser mic, it is designed to be attached directly to the sounboard of stringed
instruments.
I purchased one of these and was very disappointed with the result. It required a lot of EQ and still sounded (to my ear) like most of the contact
transducers I have tried over the years. The Dyna-G online demo was very impressive. I may even try one myself. If you go ahead with the Dyna-G,
please let us hear how it sounds on your oud.

Hi to all, I have recorded a little track with a AKG 414 mic and a DYN-G pickup.
the first is the microphone, the second the pickup and the third the pickup with EQ.

Hi,
I bought a Shadow SH 700 NFX pickup and i must say it works very good on my oud.
Its easy to instal, just put it in the string-ring( dont know the correct english word).There is a little pre-amp include.It has a pre-amp-holder
fixed on the oud with doubleside stickytape
I play with a Band, so I need to play loud.I use a Peavey Delta-Blues guitar amp.
I had no feedbacks and the sound is pretty natural.I guess it gets even better with a equalizer and an acoustic amp. The price was 180€ and I think
it is worth to try.
