I wish I knew! I've read that it's a technique that replaces the risha with the fingers of the LEFT hand to pluck the strings - sounds fairly cryptic. I know Naseer Shamma uses a tapping technique of sorts, but apparently this Basm was invented quite a while ago. David's website mentions it:

Hi

Ahmed Mukhtar use this technique manytimes during our lessons. He flick his left middle finger over the last bass string while playing the takasim. Im not sure if you call that a basm technique-any comment?

Could it be the plucking of the string with the fingers of the left hand (i.e. a string is pressed by the index and plucked by the middle finger of the left hand)?

It looks like David has done a lot of research. Wow! I beleive his site was the first one I ran into on the Internet regarding the Oud. Good job David!

Hi Elie

In that case we (guitarist) call it a hammer on or pull off technique. Thanks chuckerbutty for bringing this up-I think more this kind of question should be present here! I mean about playing the Oud and techniques of coz!:)

Hi Zul

I see what you mean about flicking the bass string - Omar Bashir does that quite clearly on the video. Is that unique to the Iraqi style, and if so, could it be the reason why the bass is the first string on Iraqi ouds?

Surely hammering on and off is fairly fundamental, it's not really something that needs to be invented?

Hi

I did asked Mukhtar about the single bass string (being at most bottom) and according to him its a Munir Bashir kinda thing and the other person who follow is only his son Omar. Mukhtar place his single bass string at the top but still flicking it once in awhile during his takasim-I guess its only a simple technique regardless of the single bass string position:)

Regards
