Ok Dave here are my thoughts. The lovely thing for me about the first meet is that it was above all a social "oud" gathering, Michael Moussa came
along as an equal participant gave a talk and played. We all played, shared our oudiness, our backgrounds, with each other in warm mutuality, it was
communial. If we start buying in performers, tutors then we are looking at something else. Now if some virtuoso wants to attend as an equal
participant like the rest of us this would be cool, so so cool because he would be saying, "oud meet, yeah I play the oud, I wanna be there". Dont get
me wrong I will attend regardless, but my attendance wont have anything to do with the star of the show, whoever it is.
I'll go with the crowd, just offering thoughts as requested.
March, early April very close, June gives us more time to get the numbers up. I definately think that the availability of one, including JT and
Nazir, should not dictate the date of the meet if it means a number of others are unable to attend. C

Thanks Charlie, completely understand your point of view, as I'm sure do JT and Nizar. Lets see what the others say.

I think I'm with Charlie. I like the idea of a meeting of "equals", tho' of course we'll all be at different levels. The point is that we all meet
with a spirit of sharing knowledge, ideas, techniques, licks, tunes, etc... That is, we all meet as "peers" contributing something and we all leave
as "peers" having taken something and knowing a bit more and hopefully having "upped our game"! I think having "experts" will mean some people will
possibly be in awe of them, I know I would be, and feel too intimidated to contribute and share what we perceive to be our "lesser" knowledge.
There is, of course, value in attending workshops with "experts" and I would certainly be interested in attending if these were organised as separate
events. Either way, I'll attend the next meet as I'm keen to meet fellow players.

To be honest with you I'm still in awe of my oud itself and the unfathomable and mysterious depths that lie within its fiery little maple belly
Leon
Look forward to meeting you all

I agree with Charlie and Michael, turning the meet into an event might... not ruin... but change the spirit of the meet. Of course, meeting JT and
Niza and hearing them play live would be an absolute honour!! BUT we
shouldn't make it too formal in my opinion. No disrespect to JT but I don't understand, if you are in the UK at the time of the meet, then why are we
paying for your flight if you would be coming whether we are having an Oud meeting or not? Of course if you are coming as the star guest that's
understandable, but try to get a Ryan Air flight! And Dave, what do you mean
'more formal Workshop'??
All in all, it's gonna be a cracking day... so as long as we all meet, talk and play, who cares!

Many thanks for your input guys and I completely understand this point of view. So it seems the general consensus is no help with transport. I think
this means that JT won't be able to come, being as he's in Paris and it would involve a special trip. I do hope I haven't put anyone on the spot with
my initial enthusiasm and apologies if I've jumped the gun.
Owain, more formal workshop was an offer from JT, if we were interested -as in a teaching workshop. I haven't heard from Nizar since my last post but,
Nizar, it would be great if you could come and join us.
So we're back to the most likely date being 20th June and the venue offer of Oxford is obviously still there unless people would rather go with
somewhere further North. I'm happy with either.

Im sure I speak for all by saying no apologies needed Dave, Enthusiasm, suggestions and ideas are healthy, and good to put around, and we've still to
hear from others.
We need to agree and secure date and venue a.s.a.p.. When this is done we could maybe start a new thread, say, "UK oud meet No.2 (+ venue+ date)" and
hopefully get the numbers up as details will be confirmed for all forum members to see. Keep posting folks. C

Forgot to mention in my other post... my fingers have gotten a pretty nasty infection (or something) that has lasted for the last 2 or so months. I've
been to 3 different Doctors and each one has contradicted each other, and nobody knows what's wrong... the skin on my fingers keeps splitting for no
apparent reason and my hands go a frighteningly deep blue!
Going to see the skin specialist in more than 2 weeks (they haven't actually told me when they can see me). If this doesn't clear up before the meet I
don't think I can come, as I obviously don't want to spread it onto all the Ouds and then you lot!! That's assuming it is an infection... but better to be on the safe side. I just hope it doesn't effect me meeting you
guys... we'll see.

Owain - did they check it's not ouditis? I'm actually serious - wound strings do have things like nickel in them that could cause allergies.

I think settling on a date would be good then we can all plan ahead - I think it would be great if JT or Nizar could come along but I suspect it is
almost a different event for those who would like to attend unless they are able to just turn up like the rest of us.
I met Joe (T) a couple of years ago in London and he's a really nice guy and a terrific teacher - not at all intimidating or over judgmental but
constructive and patient.
BTW Owain, is the problem with one hand or both - if just your left (fingering) hand then it could be the nickel from the strings, if not and doctors
can't agree, try to find a homeopath in your area - my wife (the other of my four blondies) is a homeopath and although there is plenty of opinionated
views as to its effectivenss (on both sides) it could well help you, (it has worked wonders on our children at vatius times).
I agree with Charlie it wouldn't be the same without you, blue hands or not.
Best wishes
Leon

Hi Dave and Leon, both my hands are effected, not just my fingering hand (in fact, Risha hand is worse). I'm just totally confused because I don't
think it is an infection as such. I mean, my skin just keeps cutting itself and rehealing, sometimes puss comes out, sometimes it turns yellow, black
or purple... hope it's not skin cancer! Anyway, off to the GP again...
At least it's not effected my Oud playing! And sorry to bother you
guys with all this!!
-Thanks.

Hey guys
How oud specific is this meeting intended to be? Is there scope for other people interested in middle eastern music?
The reason I ask is that I play in a group with a couple of percussionists - darabuka and daf - and wondered if it was worth letting them know about
it. I was just wondering if people would like a couple of percussionists there to maybe do a bit of accompanying.
I haven't mentioned it to them yet. Thought I'd sound you guys out first. No point in getting them all enthusiastic if they won't be welcome.
regards
Michael

Hi Michael, I'm not the organizer but I'm sure anyone is welcome! At the
previous meet I mentioned to someone that I will bring a Darbuka next time so we can get some music going that isn't just Oud on Oud, and I seemed to
get a positive reaction even if I can't remember who I asked.
Looks like I won't have to buy a Darbuka and bring it now if your friends make it.
By the way, do you have any music that you guys do, I'd love to hear it!!

Hi Owain
Only very rough recordings at the mo', nothing we're prepared to release to "the general public".
If my drummers are welcome too, then maybe you'll get to hear us live!!!
Either way, I'm intending to bring darabuka, riq and probably a cajon as well as my oud.
regards
M

Wow, that's the first time I've ever heard of a cajon!! I know that must sound stupid!
What type of music do you guys play and what type of darbukas are they (Syrian, Turkish etc)? Also, who made your Oud if you don't mind me asking,
just wondering.

Cajon is a box drum commonly used in flamenco, but its sound bears a resemblance to the bendir so I sometimes use it to play Moroccan rhythms.
We use Egyptian type darabukas with the rounded rim, and we play a variety of music from Turkey, the Middle East and North Africa. In our repertoire
are such pieces as Uskudar, Rampi Rampi, Foug al Nakhal, Bint al Shalabiya, etc.. as well as some of our own pieces made up of little licks and
melodies that we've cribbed off CDs. We're currently working on the Farid el Atrache classic Leyla. I'm trying to figure out a way to throw in the
famous Clapton lick!!!
I bought my oud in Istanbul last April and it's made by Ilhan Cakan. No I've never heard of him either, nor can I find out anything about him on the
web.
