Looking for YEMENI OUD
I am trying to find excellent examples on youtube of Yemeni oud playing - - - but can't find anything.
HELP!

very cool!
seems the Yemen scene is a very social thing - - - bit of a party atmosphere, mostly dudes hanging around relaxing together, smoking etc... then
there is one dude with an oud singing... and some drumming and clapping. . . .
doesn't seem like a sort of formal "classical" tradition.
The rhythms are really complex and interesting. . . seems a definite African influence.
I really like how they are all sitting on the floor - - - I wonder if Arab music previously was a more "floor sitting" affair... like in india [in
india it would be unthinkable for musicians to sit on chairs, or wear a Western suit].

You need to be at the top of you game to play oud in yemen it's the only arabic country who is still intouche with oud and it will never die in yemen.
The indian drumes are used for when you play lahjey style some thing like this

search for the Institut du monde arabe collection of Yemen they did some masterpieces in my opinion, ok not easy listening at all..
-Hasan Al-Ajami on qanbus (ancient yemenite version of oud) with A. Ushaysh on copper plate (fantastic sound the plate and his voice, RIP): "le chant
de Sanaa", some compositions comes from 1100 others from 1700 and 1800; this is one of my preferite album of ever.
-Mohammad Al-Harithi: "L'heure de Salomon", oud, beautiful rhitmical patterns
-Mohamed Murshid Nagee: "la chanson d'Aden"
on my youtube channel you will find some videos in my preferite, unfortunately nothing about qanbus, never found anything on that on all the

That's fantastic stuff.
I can hardly see Indian Tabla being played anywhere in those videos, but I see bongos great playing and an interesting way to hold them, much like two
frame drums attached to each other, being the smallest above the other.
By the way are the guys chewing the same thing you can find in Ethiopia and Somalia?

Unfortunately, the Yemeni music section is only in Arabic (though I assume you can now at least read enough Arabic to read names (about my level).
My favorite oudist/singer is Fuad Al-Kibsy. He is found in the left-most column (the last column, reading right-to-left), sixth down from the top.
In general, you can find quite a bit of Yemeni music on YouTube, just by searching "Yemeni music" (e.g., http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFX5EibqKmQ&feature=PlayList&... )
I have quite a collection of Yemeni music on cassettes, but very, very little on CD. Sadly, despite the Bay Area's large Yemeni community, no one
seems to be importing Yemeni music anymore.

I really like yemeni music, I've been listening to it alot. The rhythms are similar to morroccan and north african music, while the oud playing is
full of tarab, sounding between africa and the arabian gulf.
So what about Faisal 3lawi? No one mentioned him:

I once heard a yemeni song on youtube with a really great 11/8 rhythm but I can't remember who sang it or what it was called. Does anyone know what

Found the song it's called ya 3rus it means "oh groom"

The rhythm is 11/8, I had lots of fun breaking my teeth on it. I'm going to learn to play this song, the maqam by the way is segah, not huzam but
segah. The only arabic music that I've heard in segah, other than only a little turkish and a little persian, is in bedouin songs. And yemeni is has
also a bedouin feel to it, which is what makes it so great I think.

What fascinates me about the yemeni style of oud playing is how the rhythms are played on the oud. Even the simplest melodies can sound so nice! This
style is proving so hard to learn! If anyone has any pointers about how to play like those guys do please share with us!
